Job Summary: The Direct Care Supervisor is responsible for supervision of Direct Care Workers assigned to a specific shift.

Additional Department Summary: The Working on Womanhood Program (WOW) is a treatment program for juvenile justice-involved female youth located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The program is administered by the Youth Services Institute through a management agreement with the Alabama Department of Youth Services. The Direct Care Supervisor will ensure the maintenance of order and safety of program youth and staff by providing leadership to Care Worker staff assigned to their shift. This person will work closely with the Care Manager to maintain and promote safety in the therapeutic environment. They will assign tasks to Care Worker staff and monitor staff progress, reporting any issues to program administration. This employee will operate the surveillance equipment and use general supervisory techniques to monitor the daily activities of program youth, monitor and record daily protocol related to any persons entering and exiting the facility, monitor access to locked areas within the facility, record any staff members call-ins and communicate this information to administration. They will assist program administration by assisting in scheduling and, finding replacement workers when there are call-ins. In addition, they will conduct regular room checks to prevent unauthorized items being stored in living, education, and/or treatment areas in order to ensure youth and staff safety. Direct Care Supervisor will take measures to safeguard youth and staff from harm and will provide accurate and timely documentation in accordance with program procedure. This unique program offers a gender-specific treatment model designed to provide innovative and responsive treatment services for juvenile justice involved girls that will aid in their growth and reentry into their home community. Therefore, the Direct Care Supervisor must utilize therapeutic skills and techniques learned during employee orientation and ongoing training. Care Workers are expected to provide daily Basic Living Skill instruction to the students and document this instruction in compliance with program, ADYS, and Medicaid requirements. This employee will also be responsible for modeling behaviors and techniques provided in training that promotes accountability among colleagues and youth regarding the safety standards, and complete information reports when safety violations occur.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in social work, counseling, psychology, human development and family studies, criminal justice, nursing or education and one year of therapeutic, rehabilitative, or behavior management experience OR High School Diploma/GED and five years of therapeutic, rehabilitative, or behavior management experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ability to learn and apply various behavioral techniques related to the care and rehabilitation of adolescent females. Must be able to work outside of normal hours, which may include nights and/or weekends, and be available for travel within the state of Alabama. Applicant must demonstrate use of sound judgment and ability to remain calm during a crisis. Must be able to perform physical crisis intervention techniques, including, but not limited to, restraint of students using Control Tactics methods.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.


Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in the operation of a personal computer is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Ability to work with diverse populations is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications: Coursework in child development and experience which includes work with delinquent youth is preferred.
