Job Summary:
The Detention Officer is responsible to ensure the safety and security of detainees in custody, acting in accordance with the highest ethical standards at all times, and ensuring a spirit of fairness and integrity in the on-going execution of their duties. Detention Officers for the Port Isabel Detention Center (PIDC) are assigned to unarmed posts inside the detention facility and are directly responsible for the supervision, safety, and security of detainees within the facility secure perimeter.
Job Responsibilities:
- Exercises surveillance and control over detainees, and maintains order and discipline.
- Supervises detainees at deportation or exclusion hearings, during transport, while receiving medical care and during other duties as assigned.
- Receives all authorized equipment and ensures that it is in proper working condition.
- Provides care, custody, and control of detainees.
- Makes official entries in the assigned post logbooks that are accurate, legible and complete.
- Removes detainees from holding areas using proper restraints and security measures.
- Attends to housing, feeding, and the physical well-being of detainees, 24 hours a day.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with organization policies and procedures.
- Follows company-wide safety policies and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting, and monitoring as outlined in company safety policies.
- Arrives on time for assigned shifts wearing full issued uniform and in compliance with dress code.
- Inventories all equipment and notates the results in the logbook.
- Successfully completes all assigned training including defensive tactics and course requiring a minimum physical stamina.
- Performs duties related to the detention, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required in the contract.
- Ensures that communication radio is in good working order with a fully charged battery.
- Conducts security and sanitation checks of the area prior to relieving the outgoing officer and throughout the shift.
- Enforces rules and regulations of the detention facility.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be able to push a wheelchair bound individual weighing up to 300 pounds and helping individual in and out of chair.
- Read, write, speak fluent English.
- Pass a criminal background and consumer credit check (no criminal record or poor credit history).
- Ability to walk through all areas of the facility for tours of duty in varied (sometimes extreme) weather conditions.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Maintain current/physical residency in the continental United States.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Possess a high degree of integrity, accountability and adhere to the American Correctional Association and DHS ICE Performance Based National Detention Standards.
Physical Capability:
Ability to walk through all areas of the facility for tours of duty in varied (sometimes extreme) weather conditions.
Ability to stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods of time.
Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations, including jogging and fast walking to incidents.
- Maintain a professional personal appearance, calm demeanor, and discretion with confidential information.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Pass all pre-employment and random drug tests.
- Must be able to meet all health requirements.
- Capable of following, interpreting, and understanding written and verbal orders, policies and regulations, printed rules and regulations, detailed written orders, training instructions and materials, and can compose written and oral reports.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs frequently and up to 70 pounds occasionally.
- Strictly maintain physical fitness standards for law enforcement related position throughout your employment under this contract.
- Proficient at observation, memory of events, and ability to recall events to document in written reports.
- Obtain and maintain a DHS/ICE government clearance.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, reach, and climb stairs, ladders and slopes periodically.
- Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations, including jogging and fast walking to incidents.
- Possess a valid state driver's license.
- Pass a medical examination and meet health requirements.
- Ability to greet and deal tactfully and professionally with the general public.
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population of people, including people of different cultures, with different values and lifestyles, with a cross cultural perspective.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a state security guard license.
- Ability to exercise good judgment: courage, alertness, an even temperament, and render satisfactory performance through his/her responsibilities.
- Must be capable of performing CPR and rendering assistance when needed.
- Ability to maintain poise and self-control during potential emergencies and unexpected situations that may involve mental and physical stress such as disturbances, altercations, fires, and building evacuations.
