Job Description

The Utah Office of Tourism is seeking a talented Destination Development Specialist to support and execute on destination development strategies.
A successful candidate will have experience in community planning/development and/or tourism destination development. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work well with both rural and urban partners including elected officials, business owners and Destination Marketing Organizations (DMO), upholding high standards of excellence. The ideal candidate will have the ability to execute on projects and see them through to completion. They will reflect patience, persistence and problem-solving skills to be able to work through difficult issues.

Principal Duties
  • Experience with sustainable tourism
  • Assist project participants with destination development plan implementation
  • Act as project manager for assigned destination development co-op grant projects
  • Developing training curricula and materials
  • Facilitating in-person workshops
  • Assist with EDA grants
  • Survey communities on destination development initiatives, goals, plans and pinch-points.
  • Travel state to meet with partners, clients, and attend conferences
  • Working with contracted partners
  • Conduct research on tourism best practices and benchmarking
  • Proficiency in crafting presentations and ability to present and speak in front of a group
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of diverse projects and complete them in a timely manner
  • Experience working with federal, state, local government, and/or tribal partners
  • Lead on Agritourism efforts
  • Assist in UOT education and training efforts, including:
  • 2+ years of tourism development experience or related field ( community development, economic development, recreation management, tourism management, etc.)
  • Ability to perform research, analyze data, and summarize information
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely through writing and presentations
  • Must be able to travel the state an estimated 10% of the time, including evenings/overnights and some weekends
  • Lead on Sustainable Tourism efforts
  • Research and implement options for destination development opportunities to meet community needs
  • Experience working with tribes
  • Lead on Tribal Tourism efforts
