What will you work on?

The Designer role requires creativity to design exceptional toy and entertainment products. This person should be diverse and flexible as a designer to take on additional products as the department warrants expansion.

How will you create impact?

  • Research and interpret current market and consumer trends
  • Participate in assessment of design concept feasibility (e.g. cost, schedule, manufacturability safety)
  • Creation of 2-D renderings and specifications, and oversee 3-D model making for developing product through to production
  • Create compelling presentations and pitch to the executive level of the organization
  • Participate in product brainstorming at all stages of development
  • Participate in concept development for existing brands and new areas of expansion
  • Participate in product strategy development and the creation of innovative slots and rationale for existing brands
  • Liaise closely with Marketing, Quality Assurance, Visual Branding and Product Development teams during the product’s life cycle


How will you fit into the team?

  • Visual Communication - can create visual presentations using appropriate software; Needs help of Design Lead/Design Manager to strategize content and intended conversation or overall desired outcome of the meeting
  • Sketching - can create rough sketches for communicating ideas; Is learning how to direct vendors effectively.
  • Specification Documenting - can create specifications and document product for DDS and PRP release; Needs accuracy check by PD, Design Lead/Design Manager; May need help to communicate and create CTQ's for play pattern, molding and DFM requirements for manufacturing costing.
  • Ideation Conceptualization - can participate in group brainstorming and starts to generate ideas on their own and become familiar with the toy industry and category. Still designs in 'silo' with limited big picture thinking and historical experience.
  • Product Life Cycle - has maybe gone through a couple of toy life cycles in their career, and still has new learnings at each stage; Has a textbook understanding of all steps but may need refinement on some of them
  • Play Pattern Development - understands a good play pattern within a category, consumer isle or pillar; Is provided much guidance from Design Lead/Design Manager to develop clear, easy, fun and effective 1-2-3 play pattern.
  • Model Development - starting to learn the many different model development processes; Can either create CAD, sketches or specifications to kick off 3D prints; Still needs support from Design Lead/Design Manager to identify key model revisions to improve play pattern and function;
  • Design Software - can do basic functions like crop an image in Photoshop, lay out specs in Illustrator, add or change contents in Powerpoint; Still learning which tools can be leveraged for efficiency on the job


What are your skills and experience?

  • 1-2 years’ experience as a Toy Designer is preferred
  • Basic understanding of ideation, brainstorming, concept rendering, sketching and computer skills, (ie: Photoshop, Illustrator, Powerpoint, CAD) are essential.
  • DDS Experience preferred

The anticipated pay range for candidates who will work in California is $60,000 to $80,000 Per Annum. The offered pay to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to years of experience within the job, years of experience within the required industry, education, etc. Spin Master Inc. is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work only in other states.
