Your Role and Responsibilities


As a Design Researcher at IBM Research on the Product Incubation team, you'll be contributing to converting early-stage generative AI technologies into real-world impact through a user-centered approach. You will plan and run user research studies to build a strong understanding of user needs and validate user experiences.


  • Structure and document user research data.
  • Plan and run usability studies to validate user experiences through clickable prototypes.
  • Communicate findings to Product Managers and other stakeholders.
  • Define protocols, plan and run exploratory qualitative studies to gather user needs.
  • Analyze user research data to generate insights on new opportunities for Generative AI.
  • Collaborate with UX Designers to translate findings into user-centered user experiences.
  • Advocate for an end-to-end user-centered design process.


Required Technical and Professional Expertise


  • Proficiency working with AirTable.
  • At least 5 years of experience in qualitative design research.
  • Ability to transform research findings into actionable recommendations for product roadmap and strategy.
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science or related field.
  • Proficiency working with Mural (or other equivalent tool).
  • Experience with design research methods including semi-structured interviews, usability testing, surveys.
  • Solid experience working in multidisciplinary teams, including Developers, Product Managers, and UI/UX designers.
  • Ability to communicate design research findings to different audiences.


Preferred Technical And Professional Expertise


  • Experience with A/B testing.
  • Experience in design research for AI applications.
  • Experience running and analyzing quantitative user studies.
  • Interest in Generative AI technologies.
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Design Thinking.

The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
