Description of Job


History Colorado creates impactful, acclaimed, and award-winning exhibitions at our museums across the state, inviting visitors to explore what makes Colorado Colorado. We are committed to developing exhibitions that investigate compelling ideas, push creative boundaries, and offer memorable opportunities for all visitors to access and engage with our shared history. The Designer & Fabricator is a valuable member of the Design & Production team, assisting in the production of History Colorado’s exhibition program across the statewide History Colorado system and works closely with colleagues throughout the organization to ensure that our exhibitions are successful across a variety of measures.


Duties


  • Participate in History Colorado’s Design & Production team as we continue to produce exhibitions that make our shared history as Coloradans accessible to all.
  • Design and fabricate exhibit vignettes, artifact armatures, artifact casework, interior structure and interactives.
  • Assist with the design, production, and installation of eight exhibitions per year on average, ranging from mezzanine installations to large gallery exhibitions.
  • Create technical drawings for out of house production.
  • Identify, develop and communicate cost savings measures for production work
  • Design exhibits to maximize in-house production and assess what needs to be contracted out of house
  • Contribute to a dynamic production team
  • Conceptualize, articulate and illustrate design concepts through renderings in response to collaboration with developers and curators as necessary
  • Support other departments within History Colorado for requested production needs
  • Help maintain a large production shop, oversee tool maintenance, and assist in planning for future expansion and modernization
  • Support exhibition design and production at History Colorado’s community museums around the state in coordination with local museum staff members.
  • Create exhibition design concepts from initial concept through completion, installation and maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


  • Minimum 2 years experience working in SolidWorks- 3D modeling.
  • More than 2 years of demonstrated success in design and production work.
  • Minimum 2 years woodworking experience using a tablesaw, panel saw, router, planer, jointer, sanders, etc.
  • Comfortable using ladders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for working directly with colleagues, volunteers, members, community groups, outside stakeholders, vendors, and contractors
  • Knowledge and excellence in construction techniques with a wide range of materials
  • Physical demand requirements- ability to lift up to 100 lbs occasionally
  • Knowledge and excellence in designing for CNC production
  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in industrial design, exhibition design, product design, set design, or furniture design.
  • Comfortable operating various lifts.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Colorado State Driver's License for occasional travel
  • Strong background in design with an emphasis on human factors.
  • An enthusiasm to explore ideas, take risks, amplify diverse voices, and help others discover what makes Colorado, Colorado.
