Design Engineer II

Southworth Products

Falmouth, ME


We are working with our client Southworth in seeking an analytical and experienced Design Engineer II, to be based in their Falmouth, ME office. The Design Engineer II role is to design and/or modify the design of lift devices and equipment from a set of written specifications and will effectively interface with Sales, Purchasing, Manufacturing and Quality in a manner that promotes sales, landed quality, and on-time shipments.


Requirements of the Design Engineer II:

· Undergraduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant design experience
  • 3+ years of 3D CADD/modeling, Solidworks preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of fabricated steel weldments
  • Able to work effectively and accurately against deadlines and time constraints
  • Thorough knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic power systems
  • Creative critical thinking skills with regards to machine design
  • Design for Manufacturability experience preferred
  • Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams and schematics preferred
  • Continuous process improvement (Lean Six Sigma)
  • Thorough understanding and ability to perform calculations of Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and Machine design
  • Experience with electrical controls and power preferred
  • Ability to self-manage daily
  • Experience drafting parts and assemblies using industry standard techniques and GD&T
  • Experience using FEA to evaluate design integrity

Responsibilities of the Design Engineer II:

  • Provide Quality and Customer Service support, as applicable; including site visits to evaluate and resolve problems
  • Develop and write comprehensive and relevant testing requirements
  • Ensure design compliance to applicable specifications, codes, and established safety requirements
  • Assist Sales by providing technical expertise, including direct customer contact, as required
  • Control product costs through design considerations for lowest cost materials and DFM approaches
  • Engineer and design new products and/or modifications to existing products from a set of written specifications and following established professional practices and procedures for design engineering
  • Perform inspection and testing on manufactured machines as part of product development or analysis, as well as failure analysis
  • Support Manufacturing with site visits, issues on the floor during assembly, and timely completion of ECRs
  • Support Purchasing with issues regarding part obsolescence and annual cost reduction initiatives
  • Able to optimize use of CAD to minimize errors and interferences in design, and to control costs
  • Perform complex design calculations to insure proper function and safety of specialized machinery
  • Establish and maintain company mechanical and hydraulic design standards and policies
