Job Description
Otter Tail County is accepting applications for a Deputy Sheriff position and to create an eligibility list for future hires. The purpose of the Deputy Sheriff position is to protect persons and property throughout Otter Tail County by patrolling designated areas and responding to criminal and emergency complaints from citizens. Deputies respond to reports of criminal or public safety activity and investigate the reports. Notice to Applicants: Due to the current public health emergency, all interviews will be done remotely via GoToMeeting technology. If you are selected for an interview, you will be provided instructions on how to interview remotely. Examples of Duties: Enforce criminal statutes. Prepare reports. Review facts to determine if criminal acts were committed. Administer first aid. Testify in court to present evidence. Evaluate requests for service to determine how to respond. Patrol areas on foot or vehicle. Investigate suspicious activities. Investigate safety hazards. Investigate traffic crashes. Transport prisoners. Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes. Interview suspects and witnesses. Enforce traffic laws. Communicate using police radio and Mobile Data Computer (MDC). Direct traffic. Assist the public with solving problems and fighting crime. Provide information on road conditions to the public. Inspect businesses with alcohol compliance. Assist Municipal, State and Federal emergency agency personnel within the County. Prepare and present crime prevention information. Instruct and educate through the D.A.R.E. program the dangers of drugs to elementary students. Responsible for the deployment of K-9 for apprehension of suspects, narcotic detection, and locating missing or wanted persons. Serve court orders, conduct Sheriff\'s sales of property- communicate with law firms and attorneys. Serve outstanding warrants from Felony to Misdemeanor levels. Dealing with the highly intoxicated and/or those under the influence of various types of chemicals. Respond to drowning victims, assist in recovery of bodies and evidence retrieval. Respond to high risk situations. May assist with duties and responsibilities as outlined in the County Emergency Operations Plan and Continuity of Operations Plan. This position is regularly scheduled to work 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. The 2023 starting salary for this position is \$29.25 per hour, depending on qualifications, with advancement to \$43.87 per hour. The selection process will include written and oral communications, physical agility testing, psychological and medical examinations, background investigation for finalists. A standard 12 month probationary period applies. Please note: This position is considered a safety-sensitive position due to the essential job duties in accordance with Minn. Stat. 181.950, Subd. 13. Safety-sensitive employees are subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing. In addition, all employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, follow-up, and post-accident.
