Role Summary


Under the direction of the Operations Manager and Ohio Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing all facets of the delivery process including managing daily delivery routes, driver training and scheduling to ensure accurate, on-time and damage-free deliveries and product pickups in the most cost-effective manner. This is a working supervisor position and requires the individual to ride with drivers to observe their performance, evaluate delivery routes and procedures. The supervisor may be required to deliver routes on an as needed basis.


MEASURES OF SUCCESS


  • Deliver routes on an as needed basis.
  • Structure delivery routes to maximize efficiencies and minimize expenses.
  • Promote a safe and efficient working environment for all employees.
  • Ensure all paperwork for Hills is completed and processed in a timely manner, including shipment of POD forms, RGA forms and checks to appropriate location.
  • Take incoming calls from drivers, customers, LTL carriers, Sales and Customer Care departments.
  • Ensure operations are in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, including the Department of Transportation. This includes maintaining necessary paperwork, including logs, pre-trip inspections, vehicle maintenance records and Driver files
  • Communicate with the Operations Manager - Milwaukee, the Ohio Transportation Manager and other personnel on a daily basis to maintain effective operation of Milwaukee delivery operations.
  • Assist with maintenance of timesheets for hourly personnel to ensure they accurate and complete prior to payroll processing.
  • Work with outside vendors and freight carriers on maintenance, purchases and to maintain low shipping rates.
  • Onsite presence
  • Prepare and post Weekly Route Delivery Schedule, including driver and vehicle assignments.
  • Coordinate special deliveries and pickups with other supervisors or departments and schedule accordingly.
  • Work with truck Lease Company regarding vehicle maintenance issues, and coordination of substitute or rental vehicles as needed.
  • Ensure that new hire, benefit, and other HR paperwork is processed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Regular attendance
  • Hire, train, develop, evaluate, and discipline delivery personnel. This includes planning, scheduling personnel, monitoring employee workloads, documenting employee performance and conducting performance reviews to fit operational needs. Also includes enforcing and abiding by Company policies and procedures. Will inform management and Human Resources of problems as they arise.


IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES


  • 1-year previous supervisory experience, including training, development, and evaluation of delivery drivers.
  • Must have strong understanding of DOT guidelines and experience working with leased or owned vehicles.
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the Delivery Driver position.
  • Must be an excellent problem-solver, organized and attentive to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and planning skills. Able to plan and be proactive to prevent time spent reacting to problems.
  • Must always maintain a valid Class A or B CDL with air brake endorsement and a valid DOT medical card.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written format. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, including previous experience working with Transportation Management Systems.
  • Must be able to operate basic office equipment including telephones, copy machine, fax machine and computer (Microsoft Word, Excel and Lotus notes).
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours based on operational demands; including working early mornings, late nights or split shifts if necessary. Position requires working until the job is complete.
  • Must be willing and able to travel on routes with drivers, including overnight routes.
  • Post High School education in business, operations, warehouse, or logistics management preferred, or four years of experience in a warehouse or logistics environment.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and supervision skills to aid in the development, direction, delegation and discipline of staff. Must be understanding of people and their problems, diplomatic and have a sense of fairness and consistency.
  • Must be familiar with, understand, abide by and enforce all Company policies and procedures.


Additional Candidate Attributes Preferred


  • Experience working in a distribution environment.
  • Able to safely operate and become certified in the operation of warehouse equipment including forklifts and walk-riders.
  • Previous routing experience.
