As the Data Steward, you will be the primary point of contact for activities related to data organization, visibility and controls and associated data management in the Engineering Department. You will work with engineers, managers, and technicians to help set and maintain the standards for accountability and activities for the assessment, improvement and governance of data quality and ongoing fitness-for-purpose of the Engineering Department’s critical data assets. The primary data assets are related to products, engineering services, and projects.

The Data Steward is not the owner of the data but rather serves as a trustee to ensure that adequate data quality is maintained to effectively support our internal and external customers. You will ensure that the appropriate data is available to support the Engineering Department’s objectives. You will engage with Engineering leadership to help support data governance and to quantify and articulate the business impact of data quality issues. You will assesses the current state of data quality within the scope of your responsibility. You will establish target goals for data quality improvement and identify optimal approaches for resolving data quality issues to achieve targets. You will work within and beyond Engineering’s area of control to implement improvement approaches. You will identify data quality metrics and execute data quality audits to benchmark the state of data quality. You will also monitor, track and report ongoing data quality levels.

You will recommend and implement alterations and enhancements to improve data quality and processes. The focus is on standardization, availability, usability, consistency, integrity, and security.

Projects may include, but are not limited to, preparing and presenting on data status, writing reports, organizing data, creating systems, and implementing new processes. Create data presentations to provide visibility in support of business goals.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

Create and implement new data management systems (40%):

You will prioritize projects, formalize processes, formalize controls and responsibilities over processes, create and implement systems, create accessibility; manage access rights, create presentations of data for planning, etc. You will help maintain associated controls and procedures for the entire data lifecycle.

You will communicate with users and other interested parties in order to establish best practices.

Your will help build a data management framework that is accessible, manageable, strong, secure, adaptable, and as error-free as possible.

Manage Data and Maintain systems to promote data quality and availability and Help Develop Data Management Tools (30%):

  • Managing clear rules for changing processes and data that help the organization become more agile and scalable
  • Increase efficiency through the ability to reuse processes and data
  • Improve compliance with data regulations
  • Help reduce costs through the provision of central control mechanisms
  • Provide support stemming from consistent, uniform data across the Engineering Department
  • Improve confidence in data quality and documentation of the data processes
  • Support proactive and reactive change management activities for data values and the structure/use of data.

Continuously monitor processes and applications with an eye to develop new data sources, apply new technologies, etc.

Provide input on software solutions, policies, or regulatory requirement needs.

Analyze current state of data management in the Engineering Department (20%):

You will investigate the types and sources of data used and identify the associated domains, roles, responsibilities, and processes currently used in the Engineering organization. Identify critical data elements and data owners.

You will develop experimental plans, organize and analyze data, and make decisions. You will lead and manage projects, collaborate with other departments and stakeholders including, but not limited to, Product Managers, Marketing Managers, and Manufacturing Managers.

Provide internal application support and training as well as evaluation of processes and procedures in pursuit of continual improvement related to data management (10%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Reasoning: Effective analytical, technical, and problem solving skills. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to display independent judgement to make decisions where no clear precedents exist. Can adjust plans and deliverables with the right approvals and the business goals in mind.
  • Two years previous work experience, preferably in maintaining data quality, resolving data conflicts, reporting statistics, creating data presentations.
  • Reading Comprehension/ Speaking/Writing: Ability to read, write, and interpret documents such as work instructions, operating procedures, standards, specifications. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of internal customers or employees of Simpson Strong-Tie.
  • Knowledge: Practical working knowledge of data governance and stewardship roles. Have a general understanding of technical and scientific topics.
  • Application Software: Frequently used application software includes Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, SAP, and Excel as well as other software.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills needed, as clear communication is required to effectively deliver projects to internal customers as well as direct team members.
  • Ability to ensure that all standards are followed and controls are adequately designed and implemented.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Basic programming knowledge is a plus.
  • Organization: Strong organizational skills. Ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Team Player: Demonstrated ability to motivate and work with team members. Must be able to connect, interface, and communicate well with a variety of internal partners in sales, marketing, IT, quality, production, and engineering.
  • Exceptional ability to learn and work with new applications.
  • High level of competence using data related applications
  • Understanding of database concepts
  • Data stewardship experience preferred

WORK STATUS & LOCATION

This full-time, exempt position is located in Pleasanton, California. It is eligible to work from another Simpson Strong-Tie location and/or hybrid remote.

RELOCATION

Relocation will not be considered for this position.

Pay

$54800 - $85400 / year
