Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for routine and special coverage in any of your group’s buildings as assigned by the group lead custodian. A twelve month position, mainly Monday through Friday, with occasional extra or weekend time required to cover special events.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: High School diploma.
EXPERIENCE: Custodial experience helpful.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Ability to perform cleaning procedures in a dependable and conscientious manner. A team player, able to work with others or alone as the situation demands. Good communication and relational skills needed in relating to other staff and building users.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May be exposed to chemical, mechanical or electrical hazards. May be exposed to dust, fumes, and odoriferous working conditions. May be required to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Will need to be on feet most of work time.
Regular Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms and locker rooms and stock with supplies.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Mirrors and dispensers are cleaned daily, five times a week.
  • Showers are scrubbed weekly and drains are cleaned out.
  • Hard floors, including shower floors, are wet mopped daily, five times a week.
  • Trash cans and disposal boxes are emptied daily, five times a week, and kept properly lined.
  • Commodes, urinals, and sinks are swabbed and disinfected daily, five times a week.
  • Walls and partitions are wet wiped weekly, or more often if needed.
  • Carpeted floors are vacuumed daily when locker rooms are in use.
  • Paper supplies, soap, and personal hygiene items are checked and stocked daily, five times a week.
  • Water is poured into floor drains (if present) weekly for odor control.
  • Care of classrooms, labs, studios and other instructional areas.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Student computer labs are dusted and vacuumed two times each week.
  • Chalk boards, white boards, and erasers are cleaned daily, five times a week when classes are in session.
  • Chalk is available as needed for instructional use.
  • Pencil sharpeners are emptied weekly.
  • Ceramic studio is hosed down after each class day.
  • Special set-up is done as requested by the Physical Plant Director.
  • Table and desk tops are wet wiped daily and writing and other markings are removed.
  • Carpets are vacuumed and tile floors dust mopped daily when classes are in session.
  • Window sills, other ledges and furniture surfaces are wet wiped weekly.
  • Furniture is returned to usual position as needed.
  • Clean stairwells, hallways, entrance areas and elevators.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Hand rails and stair ledges are dusted and wet wiped weekly.
  • Door glass is cleaned daily, five times a week.
  • Hard surface floors are swept or dry mopped daily and wet mopped weekly or more often if needed.
  • Carpeted floors are vacuumed daily, five times a week.
  • Corners and ledges are kept free of dust and spider webs.
  • Entrance mats are vacuumed daily, and kept in place.
  • Water fountains are disinfected daily.
  • Elevator inner walls and doors are wet wiped daily
  • Office, copy room and work room care.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Floors in work rooms and copy rooms are cleaned two times a week.
  • Door glass is cleaned weekly.
  • Telephones and keyboards are disinfected weekly.
  • Floors around paper shredders are cleaned daily.
  • Faculty offices are dusted and vacuumed once each week.
  • Counters in work rooms are cleaned weekly, and soap and towel dispensers are filled as needed.
  • Administrative and support staff offices are dusted and vacuumed twice each week.
  • Care of Auditorium spaces.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Hard floors are wet mopped once each month.
  • Stage areas are dust mopped weekly or more often if needed in connection with performances.
  • Window sills, baseboards, organ consoles and other furniture are dusted once each week.
  • Upholstered seating is vacuumed three times a year, and shampooed once each year.
  • Carpeted floors are vacuumed after each event, or at least two times a week.
  • Hard floors are dust mopped after each event, or at least two times a week.
  • Trash is removed from seating areas and book racks after each event.
  • Care of study areas, lounges, kitchens and laundries.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Counter tops, stove tops, tables and inside of microwaves are wet wiped daily, five times a week.
  • Windows are spotted weekly.
  • Washers and driers are wet wiped weekly.
  • Kitchen sinks are scrubbed weekly.
  • Furniture is returned to standard set-up as needed.
  • Ledges and corners are kept dusted and free of spider webs.
  • Upholstered furniture is vacuumed once each month.
  • Hard floors are swept daily and wet mopped weekly or more often if needed.
  • Carpeted floors are vacuumed daily.
  • Athletic facility care.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Bleachers are cleaned after events.
  • Gym floor is dust mopped daily and scrubbed weekly.
  • Floors of track, aerobic, cardio, and free weight areas are swept daily and scrubbed weekly.
  • Trash and recycling pick-up.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Trash and recycling containers are kept properly lined and liners replaced as needed.
  • Trash is collected from faculty offices three times per week.
  • Trash is collected from all receptacles in public areas and administrative offices daily.
  • Trash and recycling containers are kept clean by monthly wiping and washing as needed.
  • Trash collection carts are kept properly lined.
  • Recycling containers are emptied weekly or as needed.
  • Trash room floors are cleaned weekly.
  • Porches and outside entry areas.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Porches and outside entry areas are swept weekly.
  • Porches are washed when needed.
  • Outside mats are kept clean and in place.
  • Safety and security.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Only prescribed cleaners are used.
  • Caution is used around wet floors.
  • Cleaners are used according to recommended procedures.
  • Theft and vandalism is reported to the Physical Plant Office.
  • There is an awareness of locking and unlocking times, and secured areas are kept locked.
  • Supervisor is notified of potential health or safety hazards
  • Any suspicious non-students loitering around buildings are reported to the Physical Plant office or security.
  • Closet and equipment care.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Lead is notified when paper and other supplies need to be restocked.
  • Sink is rinsed out after each use.
  • Mops and cleaning rags are rinsed, wrung out and hung up to dry.
  • Buckets are emptied and rinsed at the end of each shift.
  • Vacuums are wet wiped and bags and brushes are checked weekly.
  • Chemical bottles are left filled and ready for the next day.
  • Floor is wet mopped daily.
  • Related duties as instructed and required.
Satisfactory Performance Is Achieved When
  • Spills and spots on carpet are reported to the lead.
  • Help is given to deep cleaning projects as directed by lead.
  • Assistance is provided for other departmental work as requested by supervisor or lead.
  • Training and supervision is given to student employees as directed by lead.
  • Staff meetings are attended as requested.
  • Lead is notified of needs for repair or replacement of equipment and facilities.
