This position is located at the Office of State Museum in New Orleans, LA and is in a Career Progression Group to a Curator 3. This position may be filled as a Curator 1, 2, or 3 based on the qualifications of the selected applicant.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

Lead exhibition designer. Lead exhibition graphics designer. In consultation with the appropriate museum staff and/or guest curators/historians/artists/scholars, creates original concepts and design ideas for temporary and permanent exhibits using drawings, schematics, graphic designs, etc. to produce visually compelling, informative, engaging, innovative, relevant, and inclusive methods for visitors to discover and connect with history, art, culture, and corresponding LSM artifacts and exhibitions. Recommends ways to meet exhibition needs within budget limits.

Installs and de-installs museum exhibitions, resolving problems of design and installation; delivers and assists in the installation of exhibits at all nine LSM locations.

Supervises assistant/graphics and exhibition WAE employees. Instructs employee to conduct gallery checks and museum exhibition work areas. Provides guidance and instruction for employee to have a better understanding of LSM exhibition work practices. Helps schedule employee when available to assist with collections department and educational programs when available.

Designs and produces printed and digital graphics, text panels and interpretive labels for exhibitions using up-to-date professional methods that are experimental, engaging and accessible to diverse audiences.

Communicates and works with outside partners and contractors, when needed, to ensure the appropriately priced, and timely production and delivery of required exhibition components.

Communicates with other museum staff working on exhibition conceptualization, design, and installation in a clear and concise manner. Is familiar and adept at utilizing all appropriate museum policies, forms, etc. to effectively and efficiently accomplish tasks and goals. Helps maintain exhibit work areas by making sure department is clean and functional.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Any of the following will qualify (see note below regarding options):


  • Historic Preservation Option: A baccalaureate degree in American history, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history, geology, cultural geography, museology, history, or historical geography.
  • Historic Site Option: A baccalaureate degree in American history, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history, geology, cultural geography, museology, history, or historical geography.
  • Preservation Area Option: A baccalaureate degree in forestry, wildlife or natural resource management, botany, biology, or ecology.
  • Museum Option: A baccalaureate degree in American history, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history, cultural geography, historic preservation, history, historical geography, museum studies, museology, or fine arts.


Note


All positions are of the Historic Site, Preservation Area, Historic Preservation or Museum type.

Differs from Curator 2 by the absence of responsibility for a larger museum/program.


Examples of Work


Performs curatorial activities for a museum program at a state park Level I commemorative, preservation, or recreation area.


Plans, constructs, and displays exhibits both in the museum and on site.


Schedules and conducts tours; develops oral presentations for such tours.


Selects and assigns tour guides and maintenance staff.


Develops and implements conservation and preservation plans of historical artifacts and buildings.


Maintains records, prepares reports, and conducts correspondence regarding the museum or historic preservation program.


Performs research to develop interpretative items.


Performs accessing and cataloging activities of museum materials.


Catalogues site forms on historic buildings and places, checks and continually accessions additional site forms for inventory.


Develops projects to produce measured architectural drawings of landmark buildings, checks for quality and maintains archival collections.


Prepares and presents slide presentations and speeches to interested groups on and off site.
