About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

Essential Job Duties
This position will perform a variety of skilled tasks/functions in support of the Central Utility Plants operations. These tasks/functions may involve varying processes to test, renovate, overhaul, replace, and perform preventive maintenance on standard electrical systems such as electrical distribution panels, motors, soft starters, variable frequency drives, UPS and emergency lighting systems. Performs skilled electrical work for the five utility plants located on the Main campus, Centennial Campus and Centennial Biomedical Campus.

This work involves troubleshooting electrical problems on plant equipment such as chillers, boilers, combustion turbines, fuel gas compressors, and auxiliary equipment. Additional duties include working with inspectors, contractors, and department liaisons as requested. Work is also performed on 4160volt starter breakers for chillers.

Other Responsibilities
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear plugs.
  • This position is subject to overtime as needed.
  • Must be able to work during adverse weather and other Energy Systems emergencies even if the University is closed.
  • Hours are subject to change to meet the needs of the University.
  • Additional safety equipment to include respirator, welding leathers, welding shield, hardhat, and/or other gear related to the work site.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience in the electrical trade.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the electrical trade in maintenance in utilities or academic facility.
  • Preferred NC Electrical Contractor license.
  • Knowledge in the use of OSHA policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of and use of Lock Out Tag Out procedures.
  • Knowledge in the use of Federal and North Carolina safety policies and procedures.

Required License or Certification
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
