Job Description
Job Purpose


As the Criminal Legal Assistant, you will be responsible for providing direct and independent support to the United States Attorney’s Office Criminal Division by offering a wide range of technical and administrative assistance.


Responsibilities


  • Create a diverse range of written documents and materials using various office software applications. This involves tasks such as integrating output from different software types, such as incorporating tables from database applications or charts and graphs from electronic spreadsheets, into word processing or desktop publishing documents.
  • Greet and assist visitors and handle incoming telephone calls. Provide requested information regarding ongoing and completed matters and cases, as well as general office procedures and functions.
  • Manage the calendar for assigned active cases, utilizing calendaring software. Schedule court appointments, interviews, and conferences for the Assistant United States Attorney(s) (AUSA(s)) and provide timely reminders of commitments and court appearances.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation by independently compiling notebooks, witness lists, exhibit lists, and organizing discovery documents. Establish and manage various files related to the case. Ensure accurate and timely filing of relevant documents.
  • Draft original letters that do not involve legal interpretations but necessitate a solid understanding of legal procedures and specialized terminology. Examples of such letters include discovery and proffer letters, requests for extensions of time in specific cases, declination letters for law enforcement agencies.
  • Review, analyze, and handle various technical legal documents that are typically extensive and intricate in format.
  • Assess incoming materials and independently determine the requirement for compiling and preparing a range of legal documents, such as complaints, motions, orders, search and tracking warrants, subpoenas, and more, while ensuring compliance with rules governing style and format.
  • Perform docketing duties such as opening, updating, and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. As necessary, search database for required information.
  • Establish and maintain a suspense system to track upcoming dates and deadlines for ongoing cases, and inform the AUSA(s) accordingly. Maintain organized filing systems and ensure that all necessary documents for court hearings, interviews, and scheduling conferences are promptly and accurately filed in the respective case file.
  • Prepare discovery packages for distribution, ensuring completeness of discovery materials and making necessary redactions as required.
Education and Experience:


  • Ability to conduct legal research and analysis;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously;
  • Excellent written or oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use, understand and maintain directories, personnel lists and other guides and references to provide a variety of information on the office and to refer questions to other offices.
  • Ability to draft/develop detailed legal documents and correspondence;
  • Ability to review and effectively summarize large quantities of information
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Two (2) years of legal experience are required;
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of, and skill in using, spreadsheets and schedules, in order to gather data, analyze, and present findings.
  • Knowledge of the litigation process to include court rules and procedures for prosecutions;
