Job Description
Position Summary:
Responsible for conducting social media and crime analysis from multiple sources and platforms by collecting and analyzing data and statistics, as well as performing detailed research to interpret crime patterns and trends within the City of Garland to assist sworn peace officers conducting investigations.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Prepare a variety of weekly, monthly, and yearly departmental crime and statistical reports.
  • Evaluate law enforcement case developments and actively assist in intelligence collection and investigations.
  • Analyze social media platforms, internet sites, and computer applications to develop raw intelligence to supplement police investigations.
  • Formulate and maintain crime analysis bulletins.
  • Analyze crime data from multiple sources and present information to show crime patterns and trends that may increase investigative leads, link crimes or suspects and/or assist in solving cases.
  • Research and respond to internal and external, information requests from police personnel, City personnel, and other agencies.
  • Work with a team of investigators and crime analysts to collate crime data, including data from social media platforms, into an organizational format for comparison and analysis.
  • Provide administrative support to the department as needed.
  • Assist with tactical and strategic planning to combat crime. Prepare and distribute crime analysis information to the appropriate parties.
  • Manage requests from Investigators for intelligence and background research on suspects.
Minimum Education & Work Experience : Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Computer Science or related field of study 2 years related experience Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills:
Education/ Experience:
  • 2-4 years of experience in Crime Analysis, report writing and data collection
  • Texas Department of Safety (DPS) National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/ Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) certification preferred not required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Computer Science or related field of study
  • Certified Law Enforcement Analyst Program (CLEA) preferred not required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) used in crime analysis such as ArcView/ArcGIS Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Comprehensive knowledge of report writing software such as Crystal Reports or Access
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research design methods, procedures, and techniques used in statistical analysis
  • Comprehensive knowledge of messaging platforms such as Messenger, Discord and WhatsApp.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation and qualify for Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) access
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer software packages designed for statistical data
  • Ability to work under pressure within time constraints
  • Comprehensive knowledge of statistical program languages, performing data searches, and managing data. Comprehensive knowledge of social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter and YouTube.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid Class C Texas driver's license Physical Tasks & Working Conditions: The incumbent works in a typical office environment; relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
