Job Description

The purpose of this position is to identify, collect and preserve evidence to assist in solving criminal investigations. This is accomplished by processing crime scenes and fingerprint evidence. Other duties may include testifying in court, providing educational opportunities and departmental support and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

Essential Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.

  • Processes crime scenes by taking photographs, dusting for fingerprints, collecting, preserving and logging physical evidence, completing crime scene and evidence reports, and packaging and inventorying evidence.
  • Identifying latent prints by conducting searches on latent prints utilizing the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the FBI's Integrated Automated Identification System (IAFIS).
  • Testifies in court by consulting with court personnel concerning testimony, responding to requests for specific evidentiary information and testifying under oath on crime scenes processed for specific cases.
  • Provides educational opportunities by conducting training classes for police officers on crime scenes, teaching classes at police academies and providing public safety education at public schools.
  • Processes evidence by performing presumptive laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons, and identifications of all types of physical evidence from crime scenes and completes and distributes lab reports for each request received.
  • Provides departmental support by maintaining files and records, preparing detailed reports to ensure proper chain of custody, and assisting other organizations and agencies that do not have crime scene investigative units.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Bachelor's Degree in forensic science, crime scene investigation or related field plus the completion of Basic 40 hour Crime Scene Investigations training course through TEEX or similar agency with a basic understanding of latent prints.

Certification and Other Requirements

  • Valid Class C Driver's License
  • Intermediate Latent Print Status, or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to pass required pre-employment screenings, CJIS and fingerprint check, and have the ability to comply with state and federal requirements for Criminal Justice Information Security(Download PDF reader)(Download PDF reader)standards.

Work Schedule

  • Position requires on-call rotation schedule.

Overall Physical Strength Demands

  • Medium - Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly. Tasks involve regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderate physical demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, and walking.

_THE ALLEN POLICE DEPARTMENT - HIRING PROCESS

_Applicants are required to complete a Personal History Statement as well as a Preliminary Interview Packet to be able to advance in the hiring process. The application process may take several weeks. The most qualified applicants will advance through each phase of this process. Not every applicant will move forward. The application process is as follows:

Due to the nature of this position, an extensive background investigation, polygraph and psychological examination will be conducted on final applicants. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of these steps. Falsifying or omitting information during any stage of the selection process will make you ineligible for employment.

All selected applicants who have received a conditional job offer will be required to take a pre-employment drug screen as part of the pre-employment process.

Interview Board
During this interview, the applicant is evaluated in the areas of professionalism, dependability, reaction to pressure and situational reasoning ability, along with interpersonal and oral communication.

Background Investigation
An extensive check of criminal, driving, employment records, education, and credit references will be conducted as well as verification of character references.

Polygraph Examination
The department's polygraph examiner is licensed by the state and conducts the examinations within the state guidelines.

Psychological Examination
The applicant is assessed for their psychological suitability for law enforcement work. The applicant is evaluated for hypersensitivity, impulsiveness and frustration tolerance, as well as attributes such as achievement, flexibility, sensitivity, maturity, intelligence, somatic concerns, mood, social adjustment, anxiety, emotional control, dominance, moral-ethical behavior, impression formation and attitudes. An applicant must receive a rating of 4.0 or above to pass the psychological examination.

Once an applicant has successfully passed each of the previous phases, they will then be scheduled for an interview with the Chief of Police, or the Designee.
