WhatsApp is looking for a Creative Director to join the Foundations & Brand team. We focus on creating, maintaining, and evolving the visual systems that define our brand in the product including our design system, icons, illustration, and motion.This person will be responsible for determining high-level creative strategy, direction, and goals for various workstreams in the product that will resonate with an external global audience. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented creative leader with a concept-driven approach who constantly strives for simplicity, is known as a strategic partner to their cross-functional peers, and understands how form influences function. They are an expert in their craft, with the ability to inspire, and empower artists on a team to create their best work. They should have the ability to adapt to various creative styles and mediums, know how to work in product, and execute to a high level of craft and execution.


Creative Director - Foundations & Brand - WhatsApp Responsibilities:

  • Guide work from art directors, communication designers, various creatives, and vendors (internally and externally)
  • Implement a cohesive visual style and tone with Product Designers and Content Strategists and execute to a high level of craft and execution
  • Work cross-functionally, balance the needs of stakeholders, and break down complex narratives into simple, compelling ideas
  • Define and oversee the strategy and creative direction of scalable in-product visual systems
  • Drive strategic decisions around the future direction of WhatsApp and create a visual language and style that becomes iconic



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in creating and directing high-quality work on large projects (including digital product design, motion, and illustration) in a fast-paced environment
  • 8+ years of visual design experience with proficiency in typography, desktop/mobile UI, color, layout, iconography and aesthetic sense and how these elements impact product function
  • Experience with copywriting, building visual systems, and shaping and leading product design and brand systems
  • Experience coordinating, directing, providing creative direction to contractors, agencies, and in-house designers
  • 8+ years of experience as a Creative Director at a creative agency or an in-house team with a focus on visual storytelling
  • Presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the experience to communicate complex, sometimes abstract, concepts clearly and persuasively
  • Online portfolio showcasing relevant work is required—work must demonstrate dedication to design excellence in a variety of digital media (mobile, web)
  • Foster inspiring and inclusive team/work culture and empower all team members



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience connecting your work with other industry-leading related initiatives across the company while driving collaboration
  • Examples of leadership in non-product dimensions that have made a team stronger and positively impacted the work environment
  • Experience showcasing your end-to-end design process across multiple projects, that include interaction and visual design artifacts, multiple iterations, high-fidelity prototypes, and consideration of the impact and scale of work
