Position Description


We are seeking experienced candidates to join our Communications department as a Creative Services Associate. The ideal candidate will have a passion for aligning the audience experience with Mathematica’s design standards and those of our clients. With limited supervision, this individual works with senior designers to help co-workers translate diverse data, research, and evidence into user-friendly, integrated designs in multiple formats, including long-form PDF reports, animations/videos, corporate and client websites, presentation decks, data visualizations, infographics, as well as promotional materials and dissemination products.


The Creative Services Associate Will


  • Provide attention to detail needed for producing polished, professional-grade work in published, printed, and electronic media
  • Act as an informal resource for associates with less experience; provide guidance and support to team members
  • Actively support the advancement of organizational diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and apply diversity, equity and inclusion lens across job responsibilities
  • Meet tight deadlines and update teams on progress through project management software, email, and in person
  • Assemble images, typography, and motion graphics to create compelling designs
  • Apply and maintain consistent design standards to content across all materials as specified by Mathematica/client brand guidelines
  • Apply UX/UI principles and approaches that enhance accessibility
  • Serve as an ambassador and effectively communicate the importance of strong design fundamentals to staff throughout the organization
  • Incorporate storytelling and compelling narrative into visual design
  • Stay up-to-date with industry standards, best practices, and software
  • Format high volumes of detailed content for static documents in InDesign for PDF and PowerPoint
  • Participate in brainstorms and develop creative concepts


Position Requirements


  • A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
  • 2+ years of experience with designing icon-based illustrations from scratch
  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, UX/UI, data visualization, or related field
  • High school diploma + 5 years of relevant job experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with formatting content based on existing styles
  • 3+ years of experience in producing complex designs in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, PowerPoint, and Word
  • 2+ years of experience developing annotated mocks for software development teams

This position offers an anticipated base salary of $55,000 - $65,000 annually.


Available locations: Washington, DC; Princeton, NJ; Chicago, IL; Remote


Various agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
