Summary

King County District Court Profile
KCDC is the largest and most technologically-advanced Court of Limited Jurisdiction in the State of Washington. It currently processes approximately 200,000 matters per year with 25 elected judges and roughly 260 employees at 8 separate locations. The Court is a leader in many areas involving public safety and access to justice, including the use of problem-solving courts, jail-alternative programs, technology and judge-managed probation services. Twelve cities contract with King County for court services provided by KCDC.
A Competitive District Court Clerk Candidate
King County District Court is seeking Court Clerks who are active learners, adaptive, reliable, and action-oriented to establish a competitive pool of candidates for current and future, permanent and temporary, Court Clerk positions throughout King County District Court. Due to COVID-19, KCDC has an increased workload, due to the backlog and the Court is creating a more efficient process to fill vacancies as they occur. Court Clerks perform technical work and provide clerical support for the operations of the court and work under the direction of the local courthouse management.
Court Clerks must provide outstanding customer service during stressful situations, have impeccable attention to detail, thrive in a team environment with superb problem-solving skills, and be comfortable interacting with Judges, attorneys and executive-level management on a daily basis. We need Court Clerks to be committed to continuous learning, open to change with a positive attitude, and be able to succeed in a fast-paced and a culturally-diverse environment. Candidates with fluency in one or more of the following languages are encouraged to apply: Amharic, American Sign Language, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Somali, Spanish or Vietnamese.

Job Duties

Scope of Responsibility of a District Court Clerk
Court Clerks are expected to learn all functions of the position, which include but are not limited to: accurate filing of criminal, civil, traffic, small claims, domestic violence, name changes, and anti-harassment matters; providing excellent customer service; managing and correctly recording courtroom proceedings; correctly completing accounting and data-entry duties; learning and applying legal terminology; maintaining electronic court files; and preparing warrants, subpoenas, calendars and miscellaneous documents and following procedures in addition to general clerical competencies.

Supplemental Information

  • Work location: Various Courthouses that are located in Seattle, Shoreline, Redmond, Bellevue, Issaquah, Burien, MRJC (Kent), and Auburn.
  • Working Conditions: Work is typically performed in an office environment with a moderate amount of noise (computers, printers, light traffic). This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • Union Affiliation: This position is represented by Local 21 DC.
  • Special Requirements: US Citizenship is required. A contingent offer is based upon the results of a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting.
  • Selection process: Application materials will be screened for qualifications; the most competitive candidates will be invited for one or more panel interviews. Any employment offer will be contingent upon the results of a criminal background investigation and finger printing.
  • Work schedule: This recruitment will be used to fill future Regular or Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) positions working a 40-hour work week. Responsibilities occasionally may require overtime in order to meet deadlines.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk or hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and move and/or lift up to 10 pounds. The vision abilities required to perform this position include close vision.
