Objective
This position provides assistance to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Linn County and to the County Extension Council for delivery of Pick a Better Snack (PABS), Kids in the Kitchen and/or 4-H youth programming. Position engages elementary-age children in high-energy, hands-on programing and education. Educator also engages partner agencies to host education sessions as part of existing programming (before/after school, summer care, etc.). Position interacts with youth in school, after school and during summer programming to teach healthy living, nutrition and cooking skills and positive youth development.
  • Schedule may fluctuate as needed to prepare and provide after school and summer enrichment opportunities. Night and weekend work availability is a must.
  • Works cooperatively with other youth of nutrition programming staff and supervisors.
  • Reports to the County Extension Director. Will be jointly supervised by EFNEP and SNAP-Ed programming supervisors.
  • Position may expand or change to include other job responsibilities in nutrition and youth development.
  • Full-Time hourly position - rate based on experience and education
  • Benefits include health insurance, vacation and sick leave, and IPERS. Travel is reimbursed.
  • Follows Extension Council and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach administrative guidelines.
  • Assist and provide support for Linn County Youth and Nutrition programs as needed or assigned.
  • Requires initial training with potential of initial and subsequent travel.
Responsibilities
Program Development/Maintenance
  • Support educational programming and other areas as assigned.
  • Attend training and planning sessions when appropriate.
  • Support the management of financial budgets for individual programs.
  • Provide school enrichment and out-of-school programs utilizing research-based curriculum in cooperation with the County and State Extension and Outreach staff.
  • Assist with media and marketing efforts as needed.
  • Help identify potential youth audiences per county guidelines, with an initial concentration on K-5th grades.
  • Network with related county organizations.
Youth Development
  • Organize and conduct educational activities for youth in the areas of Positive Youth Development and Nutrition.
  • Encourage development of life skills among program participants
Volunteer Development
  • Assist team in recruiting volunteers for various roles and activities.
  • Assist volunteers in conducting assigned tasks.
Communication/Relationships
  • Represent Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in a professional manner when in the community.
  • Contribute as an integral and productive team member of the Linn County Extension Office.
  • Provide information and assist in recruiting audiences for activities and events.
Resource Development
  • Build strong relationships within the education community in Linn County.
  • Build the 4-H Youth Program, PABS, and Kids in the Kitchen programs in areas determined by the Linn County Extension Council.
  • Identify and utilize staff expertise for the development of the Youth and Nutrition programs for items outlined in job description.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest in youth and volunteer leadership; ability to work with a team
  • Work experience equivalent to one year of full-time employment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal) and networking skills a must.
  • Capable of delegating tasks and coordinating volunteer efforts; conflict management skills
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds
  • Knowledge and experience working with K - 12th grade youth a must. Nutrition education and/or 4-H experience valuable.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent
  • Minimum two-year post-secondary degree.
  • Employment contingent on successful screening in Child Protection Safety Program (Criminal Background Check) and Linn County Extension Council Approval.
