Job Description
Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year

DEFINITION

The employee who serves in this position will support internal communications to shape uplifting, motivational coverage of Norfolk Public Schools’ employees as well as information that all employees need to know. This employee will be responsible for assisting in the development of focused internal communications campaigns, will help to establish and maintain an internal employee newsletter, as well as content for a comprehensive staff intranet site. Additionally, this employee manages social media for Norfolk Public Schools in support of its communications and community engagement efforts. Additionally, this position requires graphic design, photography, videography and reporting and writing skills, as well as extensive knowledge of available social media platforms, how they work, and best practices for each, encompassing using these platforms as effective means of customer service, communication and storytelling, along with issues management and crisis communications. The NPS Coordinator of Internal Communications and Social Media will be responsible for creating social media content as well as reviewing and scheduling content submitted for publication by other team members. NPS currently uses Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The coordinator will be responsible for growing the division’s followers on these platforms. The coordinator will also be responsible for launching NPS division accounts on additional platforms, such as LinkedIn, to expand the division’s reach to our community including residents, business owners, volunteers, staff, parents, students and alumni. For all platforms, the coordinator will help to monitor and engage with our stakeholders by providing timely responses, monitoring comments for accuracy, and helping to identify champions and ambassadors for the division. Additionally, this employee will support the entire communications team with other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Communications and Community Engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (Performs a variety of duties itemized below.)

Develops content and support for staff intranet communications plan for this platform. Develops and implements employee newsletter and other internal communications initiatives.

Creates and helps to support strategic use of social media to align with division priorities as stated in the strategic plan and supports the strategic plan and priorities of the Communications team.

Assists with the design and execution of a plan to increase the division’s social media footprint, including increasing engagement (likes, shares, retweets, followers, along with responses and interactions) on existing platforms, providing more interaction and high-quality customer service with followers on these platforms, verifying the division’s accounts on those platforms and establishing and growing additional social media channels.

Creates original content for division social media including photos, graphics, videos and text.

Reviews content submitted by other team members when necessary.

Assists in the creation of social media communications that foster dialogue, collaboration, understanding, engagement, and trust.

Assists in responding to resident and community comments and posts that tag/@mention NPS on social media platforms.

Assists in monitoring social media platforms for content that affects NPS.

Supports communications responses on social media during crisis situations.

Develops, coordinates, and executes effective social media campaigns for NPS programs and initiatives and collaborates with the Community Engagement Coordinator to effectively engage community stakeholders.

Performs other duties and manages special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of social media platforms including, at minimum, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn as well as concepts, practices, and strategies for using social media and willingness to learn and embrace new platforms.

Extensive knowledge of using mobile devices to capture pictures and video in support of social media, and ability to create and post content from these devices error-free and independently.

Ability to create graphics using Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, or other graphic design tool.

Excellent writing and storytelling skills to enhance social media posts.

Knowledge of best practices for hashtags, emojis, GIFs, and memes and using the functions of each platform (buttons, scheduling, polling, tagging, boosting, paid ads, etc) to support social media content.

Ability to plan, coordinate, organize, schedule, and prioritize activities, functions, and
assignments.

Ability to independently identify and cultivate continuing social media stories/campaigns/efforts and create ways of improving and sustaining content.

Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with superiors, peers,
government officials, community organizations, business leaders, and the news media.

Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, including emergency and critical situations and the ability to calmly communicate with audiences, internal and external, during critical situations.

Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and present information, both orally and in writing.

Ability to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field; Minimum of three years of experience in strategic social media plans; previous experience in the public sector and/or public schools is preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

None. Commercial Drone Pilot’s license preferred.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in an office setting as well as throughout the school division and school community. Work is frequently subject to deadlines and requires attendance at weekend and evening meetings held locally and throughout the state and involves all employee groups and broad-mandated programs. Additionally, work requires continuous professional development in the areas of communications, media, community, and public relations.
