Job Description

Summary

The purpose of this position is to work as a team member to provide the highest level of Engineering Advantage to our customers by improving designs for manufacturing, profitability, performance, quality, and customer requirements on existing and new products; to provide design support on existing products to all departments within the company; to provide evaluation of all ECNs and BOM revisions to drive customer satisfaction and contribute to sales growth. Perform routine processes, which require application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out production sustaining engineering duties, redesign of existing products, and design of new products. Travel will be required between the Rochester Hills and Saline facilities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Rely on established guidelines to apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Acquire and apply sound engineering judgment to problem solving in both design work and in production issues.
  • Effectively utilize various CAD programs to create simple models, and schematic drawings for designs.
  • Assist sales in the quoting of systems as they relate to controls.
  • Under general supervision, research requirements, present design options, and document results for project team or engineering management.
  • Assist in the design and implement verification and validation programs to ensure designs are adequate for intended purpose.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Technical expert for electrical controls, program logic controls, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide sales support and technical evaluations at customers facilities as they relate to equipment integration.
  • Keep area clean and organized in accordance with 5S standards.
  • Provide installation support at customer sites and visit customer sites for sales support (25% of time).
  • Under general supervision design, develop, and implement custom engineered solutions meeting customer product specifications and all industry and regulatory requirements.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally. Potentially up to 25%, for a duration up to 1 week at a time.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve product integrity issues with an appropriate sense of urgency and within required company timeframes. Supports VAVE and product transfers.
  • Drive all activities relating to ensuring existing and new equipment is built and running in accordance with specifications. Including the troubleshooting, debugging, start-up, and programming of all automated equipment and upgrades (Internal and/or external equipment).
  • Communicate and behave in a professional manner that supports the mission, vision, and policies of the organization.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of engineering design, documentation, and bill of material for products on both a domestic and global level.


Education and Experience

  • Electrical emphasis on Controls with 5+ years’ experience in programming automated manufacturing control systems.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree Electrical Engineering (BSEE), or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficient with PLC ladder logic, Allen Bradley, and Siemens.


Skills and Competencies

  • Able to perform simple mechanical tasks.
  • The ability to design, build and wire control panels.
  • Completes technical documentation with minimal direction.
  • Understand and develop the required logic to create handshakes between equipment and I.T. systems.
  • Competent with hardware and software integration.
  • With direction, able to troubleshoot hardware and software.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering terms and standard engineering techniques.
  • The ability to program or modify PLC and HMI’s (Allen Bradley, Siemens, etc.).
  • Able to perform soldering and wiring.
  • Show technical expertise with control panels, HIM screens, HMI programs, PLC programs, and project files.
  • Ability to specify required hardware.
  • Able to construct PCB layout with direction is a plus.
  • Able to perform analogue simulation with minimal direction.
  • Able to perform systems design under general supervision.


Computers and Technology

  • Ability to create and edit basic 3D CAD and 2D drawings.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Visual Basic and C++ programming skills.
  • Basic command of communication protocols.
