Job Description
Job Summary
Regularly performs duties to support all facets of outside plant and mainline constructions. Comprehensive, onsite preparation and installation of outside plant materials such as fiber network, buried cable, splicing vaults, pedestals, repairs, and other associated items.
Essential Job Functions
  • Interpret staking sheets to determine materials and equipment needed
  • Utilize “Man Killing technique” ,when machines can’t be used, which is taking a spade, pushing it in the ground, working the spade back and forth, then placing the cable in the opened ground.
  • Assess inventory to ensure all required materials for installation and maintenance are properly requested to prepare vehicles and equipment for jobs
  • Assist with worksite preparation
  • Appropriately locate buried drops and cables at the job site to prevent any damage to prior work efforts of the same nature
  • Maintains and improves technical knowledge through ongoing training
  • Assist with drop and cable construction by trenching or plowing new buried drops and cables
  • Work an on-call, flexible, or rotating job schedule
  • Recognize and prevent damage to other public and private utilities by verifying location with spot checking
  • Works closely with technicians for any fiber restoration efforts
  • Assists OSP crew to assure projects are completed in a safe, cost-effective, productive manner
  • Responsible for setting up construction zone. I.E. caution signs and flagging traffic on construction site
  • Assist in providing access to buried cables by moving or repairing existing pedestals and placing new pedestals
  • Assist with complete preparation for each job – includes loading cables, pedestals and materials for transport to job site.
  • Responsible for following all safety guidance required by Zirrus - ensures safety first when working or driving. Complies with industry safety standards from OSHA and the North Carolina Department of Transportation
  • Restore job site to original state per NCDOT and/or property owner specifications
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Driving a company vehicle is an essential job function of this position, therefore you are subject to a MVR check upon hire, and annually thereafter.
  • Assists with all facets of on-site installation for underground fiber optic cable to include digging, pulling, and hanging fiber optic cable, duct, or strand
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret construction maps, plus follow directions
  • Ability to drive a company vehicle and possess Valid NC Driver License
  • Ability to work in all types of weather and environments, indoors or outdoors and handle physical demands of construction duties
  • Ability to operate locating and testing equipment
  • Knowledge of RUS and Zirrus outside plant construction practices
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Knowledge of general industry OSHA regulations and adherence to safety guidance
  • Possesses required Computer skills and knowledge
  • Ability to work flexible hours and overtime as required
  • Strong communication skills
  • Great Customer Service skills
  • Knowledge of how to operate construction equipment. (Vibratory plow, trenchers, conventional boring)
  • Proficient with use of underground utility construction tools and various hand/power tools
  • Able to frequently and repeatedly lift up to 40 pounds
Education and Experience
  • Outside plant, underground utility, or communications construction experience preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Exposure to copper or fiber optic construction
  • Technical degree or experience in comparable field a plus
  • Active Class A CDL a plus
