Job Description
Position Description: SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of Conservation and Adult Programs Specialist, the Conservation Educator will offer support to educational programs and experiences that communicate the importance of plants and nature.
Conservation programs are developed for adult, public, and community audiences and cover topics ranging from native plants, local ecology, water conservation, botany, and gardening. The person will work collaboratively with other staff to facilitate current conservation and adult programming. Duties include, but are not limited to interacting with guests, providing program support to classes and events, assisting with conservation programs, facilitating drop-in activities at program events, and developing and preparing materials for classes, guided tours, and other related educational programs.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Assist Conservation and Adult Programs Specialist with the development and implementation of educational programs in the Garden, including but not limited to classes, guided tours, outreach, and community events.
Provides educational and engaging tours of the Garden.
Educates the public at conservation outreach opportunities, including tabling events and community presentations.
Work collaboratively on the Programs team to develop and plan for SAWS-related educational programs, as well as hands-on activities for events and other large programs.
Work with fellow employees and Garden volunteers to enhance public understanding and awareness of the educational activities of the Garden.
Assist with set up and break down of events, programs, classes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors Degree, or currently pursuing a degree, is preferred in one of the following areas: Environmental Science, Geography, Environmental Education, Botany, or closely related field required. Knowledge of Texas native plants and ecology, Texas landscaping practices, gardening, water conservation preferred.
A Minimum of 1-year experience working with adult, public, and community audiences in a garden-based or informal education learning environment.
Must have flexible working hours; some evening and weekend work is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model professional standards.
Ability to work with diverse visitors, staff, and volunteers is necessary while representing the Garden in a thoughtful, friendly, and positive manner with professionalism and competence.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Basic organizational skills are required.
Proficient with MS office programs.
A passion for plants and the outdoors with an understanding and appreciation of the mission of the Garden is crucial.
Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and to bend and reach shelving. Ability and willingness to work out-of-doors in varying weather conditions.
Position requires the ability to remain positive and engaging in a varying outdoor environment with various weather conditions.
Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the individual.
