Job Summary
The role of the Community Health Worker (CHW) is to support the community engagement aspects of faculty research projects by working closely with the faculty supervisor (Dr. Ashley Meredith) and community partners such as food banks and free clinics in Indianapolis. The CHW will be trained to conduct community-based research and will contribute to study participant recruitment, informed consent, data collection, and dissemination of findings and resulting interventions. The CHW will also provide health education and resource navigation services to community members as a trusted and collaborative source of information for their clients. The CHW will screen and connect individuals to Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) including medication access, safe housing, language/literacy skills, and many more, among patients that have chronic disease states such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
The Community Health Worker will have the opportunity to work across a variety of different environments with diverse training opportunities.
This is an hourly position that will pay between $18.00 - $19.23 an hour.
In this environment, we are primarily working with populations who have experienced:
- Food insecurity, homelessness, immigration, substance use disorder (SUD), and many more
As part of our education, we will provide the CHW with:
- Brief action planning training
- Trauma informed training

- Populations that differ in areas including, but not limited to educational status, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, language, disabilities, and gender
- People with lived experiences related to primary populations
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Preferred candidate attributes:
- Previous CHW experience
- CHW Certification
What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience:
- Must have CHW certification or complete CHW training and achieve certification within first six (6) weeks of hire.
- Requires a High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE)
- Has a strong desire to influence change in their community
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a community health worker, community builder or volunteer
Skills Needed:
- Must have the ability to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods of time
- Has a strong ability to communicate in English with clients, interested parties, medical, and social-support professionals in both written and verbal form
- Has the ability to use technology and software applications, i.e. Microsoft Office, to track and record data and to submit reports
- Is flexible, adaptable, and has availability to attend some evening and weekend events
- Must be a good listener, with demonstrated empathy, a strong commitment to cultural humility and an innate ability to build relationships with clients and other members of diverse backgrounds
- Is a resident of Marion County and/or has extensive knowledge of community members, the neighborhood served, and available community resources
