Position Summary

The Child Research in Obesity Prevention (CROP) Program in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our organization as a Community Health Worker for community health research and promotion. The community health worker will help coordinate activities, deliver health coaching sessions, and provide community referrals for families in pregnancy and infancy for the Health e-Baby randomized controlled trial to prevent chronic disease. We offer care for our patients in over 25 specialty areas as well as individualized care for complex cases. Our Residency, Fellowship and Graduate programs are among the best in the Nation. Our Clinical, Translational and Basic Science research features collaborations across specialties and stretches from the bench to bedside. We also have several active Clinical trials available to our patients. This position will support research in the Department by delivering novel interventions to promote maternal-infant and child/family health starting early in life.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the maintenance of intervention materials.
  • Partners with research team and study participants to schedule, coordinate and deliver individual and group health coaching sessions for clinical trials.
  • Facilitates individual and group health coaching sessions and disseminates health education materials as per study protocol and schedule, including virtually and in-person.
  • Provides referrals to community resources based on family social and health needs.
  • Helps facilitate other clinical and community-based participatory research.
  • Provides program information to the public conducting media campaigns, and/or maintaining program-related web sites as needed.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
  • Attends study team meetings and trainings and regularly provides health coaching updates to the research team at team meetings.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with the study team, clinical staff, and participants, and acts as a health promotion resource during the course of intervention.
  • Collects information on the quality and performance of health coaching sessions.
  • Works with the study team to assist with the development of curricula, educational materials, workshops and programs as required.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate tracking logs and documents of health promotion activities.
  • Provides support to clinical staff to ensure research is successfully implemented, including maintaining an on-site presence, answering questions, and reporting successes and roadblocks to the study team.
  • Use culturally appropriate techniques to provide outreach, community education, informal counseling, and social support to intervention participants.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with some work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in health education/promotion, public health, or community health.
  • Experience with community-based participatory research and familiarity with the community in northern Manhattan and south Bronx is preferred.
  • Proficient in reading and writing in both Spanish and English.
  • Experience with health counseling in-group and individual settings.
  • Ability to work remotely and in a general office environment. Some early morning, weekend, and evening hours and travel may be required.
