The Department of Internal Medicine seeks a self-motivated, creative, and enthusiastic writer who will help highlight the research, education efforts, and clinical work in the department. As a member of our communications team, the Communications Specialist will provide a broad audience of readers with the department’s latest news in a variety of formats on an array of topics from new grants and discoveries to innovative treatments or curriculum developments. The successful candidate will lead a variety of digital communication projects and social media-related tasks while creating strong content and pitch creative ideas in support of the Department of Internal Medicine.
The Communications Specialist will report to the Director of Communication to meet departmental needs and complete various content development projects as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Conducting interviews with our faculty, staff and students, either in development of a written piece or on camera assisting the department Digital Media Specialist, the videographer
- Track, analyze, and report on social media performance metrics
- Develop social media content that is aligned with the strategy. Write social media captions, take photos, produce videos, and create graphics. Communicate the brand voice in a coherent and effective manner across all social media platforms.
- Ability to work with individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner while appreciating the unique contribution of an inclusive workforce that brings together the talents of people across multiple identities (race, creed, color, religion, national origins, age, sex, pregnancy, disability, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or associational preferences).
- Writing, developing and designing material with our graphic designer team to produce print publications
- Other duties as assigned
- Promoting published material through social media channels or designing and implementing independent campaigns on those same channels
- Writing profiles of people, programs and projects in the department
- Developing and implementing communication/messaging strategies using social media channels, as well as print, and broadcast. Establish baselines and goals for determining the effectiveness of communication plans or channels
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Department of Internal Medicine to identify and produce content.
- Reporting departmental news and promoting upcoming events
- Providing event coverage (which would include attendance and photos, along with other modes of recording where relevant)
Education Requirement:
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communication, marketing, journalism, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Required:
- Public Relations or marketing
- Experience (typically 1-3 years) in the following areas:
- Public Relations or marketing
- Producing content in a variety of formats including print, web, social media, and advertising
- Producing content in a variety of formats including print, web, social media, and advertising
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to write effectively under deadline for a variety of purposes, audiences, and media.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated organizational and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ability to think and plan across channels and develop effective communication strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to use tools and techniques for developing web-based dissemination of information, including website design, layout, and user experience requirements, and accessibility.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality infographics and/or other media to represent data, knowledge, or information.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
