The Emergency Telecommunicator / Dispatcher is responsible for receiving and effectively managing request for ambulance assistance/transport from various sources. The Dispatcher will offer pre-arrival instructions as indicated. Prioritizes and triages calls for services in compliance with defined standard operating procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Education/Work Experience Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • MUST be able to type 35-40 WPM (8,750-10,000 KPH)
  • Ability to obtain AND maintain Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • MUST be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary Customer Service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • MUST be proficient in the use of the English language, proficiency in Spanish AND English preferred, but not required.
  • MUST be of upstanding moral and ethical behavior


Essential Duties, Responsibilities, And Physical Requirements


  • Asks vital questions to interpret, analyze, and anticipate the caller’s situation to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, provide pre-arrival instructions, or refer callers to other public emergency agencies.
  • MUST be able to remain calm and communicate clearly in stressful and tumultuous situations.
  • Operates a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and TDD / TTY system.
  • Promptly answer ALL incoming 9-1-1 Calls and non-emergency calls, collects pertinent information from the caller, enters the required information into the Computer Aided Dispatch System.
  • Assists medical, police, and fire department personnel with routine inquiries such as identifying times calls for service were received, escalates queries as necessary for proper solution.
  • Persistently demonstrates excellence in customer service skills when answering the telephone. Courteous and professional with the proper usage of salutations.
  • Provides Emergency Medical, Fire, & Police Dispatch services to callers with emergencies as needed.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPPA and applicable privacy practices and standards.
  • Ability to work 12-Hour shifts, to work overtime including mandatory overtime, ability to work on scheduled days off and in the event of emergency


General Information


The Communications Director and Supervisor makes assignments in terms of shifts to be worked and the general scope of the work assignment. The incumbent must exercise judgement in applying the proper guideline to the proper situation. The work is spot checked and evaluated based on feedback from the patient, medical staff and others.
