Job Description
Location: Palouse Pediatrics
Hours: M-F 8:00am to 8:00pm, Sat 9:00am to 12:00pm
JOB SUMMARY:
As a member of the healthcare team, acts as patient and/or support system advocate. Assists in the care of hospital patients under the direction of other healthcare providers. The Medical Assistant demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pullman Regional Hospital, the relationship-based guiding principles, the philosophy of care, and goals of the unit and organization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training: Successful completion of a Certified Medical Assistant training program.
Experience: A minimum of 3 months in an acute care setting or 6 months in a long-term care setting preferred.
License/Registration: Must have current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in the State of Washington.
Population Served: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle Age, and Elderly.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Planning and Prioritizing
Plans work around department activity during the shift to optimized productivity. Demonstrates the ability to reprioritize work as needed to support other members of the patient care team. Functions in a self-directed way for routine responsibilities.
Information Gathering
Gathers and documents vital signs, ADLs, and I&O measurements and totals in the medical record. Seeks information about the What, Why, How, Where and When of patient care and department activity in order to enhance accuracy and timeliness of information exchange with licensed staff, patients and families.
Decision-Making
Uses good judgment in communicating self and patient needs to other team members and assisting licensed staff in keeping abreast of developments and occurrences. Demonstrates the utilization of critical-thinking skills and the ability to multi-task. Demonstrates initiative to explore, search and ask questions when solutions are difficult to find.
Communication
Communicates with the Clinical Coordinator/Registered Nurse/Certified Nursing Assistants what has been done and what remains to be done throughout the shift. Gathers and documents vital signs, ADLs, and I&O measurements and totals in the medical record. Seeks information about the What, Why, How, Where and When of patient care and department activity in order to enhance accuracy and timeliness of information exchange with licensed staff, patients and families. Takes responsibility for using all methods of communications provided to stay informed of organizational activities and communicates own work issues to coworkers. Participates in effective communication with coworkers.
Technical Proficiency
Demonstrates the ability to perform the required competencies for a Certified Medical Assistant according to procedure and scheduling of duties as listed in the attached list of required competencies. Demonstrates the ability to consistently perform the required skills for housekeeping duties according to procedure and scheduling of duties. Demonstrates the ability to recognize and deal appropriately with a patient emergency. Demonstrates the ability to develop and apply existing skills, as well as, learning new medical assistant and housekeeping skills as needs arise. Provides nutritional support to patient and/or their support system. Assists at nursing station by answering phones, relaying messages and performing other clerical functions.

Is actively involved in supporting efforts of patients, family members, peers and other healthcare providers to ensure quality service to all customers. Collaborates with the department manager and peers working toward achievement of organizational and departmental goals. Demonstrates the ability and willingness to float to other departments as patient care requires. Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs of others. Accepts and invites candid feedback from others about performance.
Quality
Identifies opportunities for improvement in systems and processes. Performs and documents vital signs, I&Os, and out of lab results on the medical record as they are completed.

Participates in the orientation of new employees and volunteers to duties of nursing assistance and cleaning procedures as needs arise.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Delivers mail, flowers, and personal items to patient’s room. Performs routine housekeeping activities. Performs other non-essential functions as requested.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting: 15%. Standing/Walking: 85%.
Occasional lifting/carrying of supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Occasional pushing/pulling of equipment and beds weighing over 100 pounds.
Occasional climbing of stairs to reach other levels of the building.
Frequent stooping to administer medications and perform patient care functions.
Occasional kneeling/crouching/crawling to assist patient and perform patient care functions.
Occasional reaching/handling/fingering/feeling to obtain supplies, write reports, and perform patient care functions.
Constant talking/hearing/seeing for all aspects of patient care.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Location: Inside.
Occasional exposure to wet/humidity from water, steam, pharmaceutical preparations, and body fluids.
Occasional exposure to noise to cause distraction from hospital and patient alarm systems.
Occasional risk of injury due to proximity to CPM machine, bed motors, hydraulic bed scale and Hoyer lifts.
Occasional risk of injury due to exposure to chemotherapy agents, disinfectants and cleaning solutions.
Frequent biohazard exposure from soiled patient care items and body fluids.
Occasional exposure to fumes and odors from cautery, acetone and body fluids.
Pay Range:
$18.66-$27.92 Hourly
