JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a Phlebotomist for Duke Eye Center located at 2351 Erwin Rd in Durham NC to be an integral member of the healthcare team and provide direct care to patients.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required of personnel so classified.
  • Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture, techniques using standard equipment to include vaccutainer tubes, tourniquets, syringes and butterfly needles.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies; reorder as required; stock supplies.
  • Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Centrifuge, label and store blood samples for subsequent analysis by Clinical Laboratory staff.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Provide technical training to Medical Technology students and other clinical staff assigned to work area.
  • Utilize standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification; record appropriate collection information on proper requisitions.
  • Confer with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation.


JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • For assignment to Phlebotomy Services, certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency* is required; certification of Basic Life Support preferred. Pediatric Phlebotomy requires Pediatric Phlebotomy Certification.
    • National Healthcare Association (NHA) -Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
  • High School diploma or GED. For assignment to phlebotomy, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
  • Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
  • National Healthcare Association (NHA) -Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
  • Must have at least 2 years experience as a Clin Tech I or Certification as a Phlebotomist plus achieve required competency level for specified job responsibilities.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
