Job Description
This position is responsible for providing quality Respiratory Care for patients, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Employees may be required to cover shifts at any of the Cone Health acute care hospitals. Employees will have access to pharmaceuticals on all campuses. If an employee has competencies in moderate sedation, they are approved to administer moderate sedation during bronchoscopies.


Manages invasive/non-invasive ventilator Consistently monitors and recommends patient ventilator needs. Follows ventilator protocols appropriately and accurately. Consistently strives to liberate patient from ventilator at appropriate time. Consistently visible and readily available. Independently makes recommendations to improve patient outcomes. Actively participates in rounds with physician and/or group to identify and express patient?s progress and readiness to wean.


Performs routine therapy modalities Always completes assignment to the fullest detail and per policy. Appropriately evaluates and writes orders based on respiratory driven protocols. Always acts a patient advocate and provides the patient with a positive experience. Assessments, recommendations, and actions are always in the best interest of patients. Provides care in a manner that ensures optimal safety and regulatory compliance while expediting recovery and reducing costs.


Processes blood gases Always and consistently follows blood gas protocol (collecting, processing, reporting critical values, etc.) in an accurate, timely and safe manner while meeting regulatory requirements. Mentors others in accurate reporting.


Performs advanced therapy modalities Always completes task to the fullest detail and per policy. Always acts a patient advocate. Assessments, recommendations, and actions are always in the best interest of patients. Care is provided in a manner that ensures optimal safety and regulatory compliance. Assists with bronchoscopies as needed.


Completes required documentation Has few to zero medications not given and comments made to explain. SBTs and ventilator changes are documented per policy/protocol. Always documents prior to leaving the floor. Reviews charges and fixes issues. Maintains a VAP bundle and barcode compliance of >90%.


Proficient with all computer programs and back up processes so that all documentation and charges are captured. Actions always meet regulatory/departmental/hospital requirements. Documentation occurs per policy/protocol including respiratory driven protocols. Notes are written as needed to explain changes in care. Enters all charges with no errors.


Monitors and maintains department supply levels Consistently ensures equipment is operationally ready for use (i.e., CPAP machines and ventilators). Consistently manages stock to meet customer/regulatory needs while maintaining departmental budget levels. Anticipates needs and communicates appropriately.


Exhibits department engagement and leads in a specific department role Takes ownership to complete assigned area of responsibility. Addresses concerns specific to area of responsibility to improve outcomes. Monitors and audits RT activity in area of responsibility to ensure therapist activities are appropriate for this area including effectiveness of RT services. Takes initiative to change things that need changing. Educates staff on deficiencies. Monitors improvement to changes. Always gives detailed unit reporting. Attends 75% of meetings.


EDUCATIONRequired Graduate of a 2-year school for Respiratory Therapy


EXPERIENCERequired The employee must have at least one year of clinical experience within Respiratory Care at Cone Health.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTINGREQUIRED


BLS (CPR) | AHA Health Care Provider BLS


Drivers License | Valid Drivers License


Respiratory Therapists (practitioners) must have a national and a state credential.


National Credentials Must be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a RRT.


NC State Credentials Must be licensed by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board (NCRCB) as a CRT or a RRT.


Regulatory


ACLS certification required. Must maintain current certification on file.


PALS is required for all RT?s excluding WH employees.


All Women?s Hospital Employees (Additional Requirements)


Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS) credential required and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
