As a Clinical Scientist Assistant II, this role works for the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer’s Center (VMAC) on projects focused on advancing scientific knowledge to reduce the public health burden of mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and related disorders. Current active studies include multiple large NIH-funded projects.


  • Vanderbilt Memory and Aging Project (VMAP) is a 10+ year, $20M+ NIH-funded grant to support the longitudinal study investigating vascular health and brain aging. VMAP provides a unique resource to investigate the emerging intersection of vascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease on cognitive health.


Key Responsibilities


The Clinical Scientist Assistant II is responsible for a high volume of communication with students and fellows, VMAC staff and faculty, and institution staff, as well as project management, including planning and tracking of training activities across the Center, and other research-related and administrative duties as assigned. Although some travel may be required, this position will be based in Nashville, Tennessee USA in the VMAC offices.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Oversees the coordination of the Center’s journal club, works in progress meeting, guest lectures, and annual Alzheimer’s Disease Research Day
  • Exhibits cultural competence and cultural humility.
  • Provides high level guidance for PhD students and fellows, including (but not limited to) supporting the preparation and implementation of analytical requests, assembling conference abstracts and presentations, and performing technical reviews of manuscripts
  • Recognizes and takes charge of areas of responsibility. Takes ownership of problems brought to their attention. Analyzes problems and follows through to problem resolution. Takes responsibility for mistakes and learns from them.
  • Formulates and conducts clinical research on problems of considerable scope and complexity
  • Provides high level guidance for undergraduate student trainees in the Center. Facilitates training and guidance for graduate and postdoctoral trainees. Creates a supportive and effective learning environment for undergraduate and graduate trainees.

  • Accepts constructive criticism. Demonstrates a positive attitude in response to suggestions for improvement and actively integrates feedback.
  • Prepares progress report material for all training initiatives
  • Provides clinical research expertise in an ongoing capacity
  • Supports grant submission preparation for Center Director and affiliated trainees
  • Makes decisions and recommendations that have an impact on clinical research activities with minimal supervision from faculty
  • Fosters an environment that encourages and supports self-development and learning through regular, timely feedback.
  • Oversees the creation, coordination, and implementation of programmatic activities related to the Vanderbilt Interdisciplinary Training Program in Alzheimer’s Disease (T32 grant) and forthcoming R25 VAND-INVEST program and P30 Research Education Component.
  • Creates and supports a climate of trust, openness, and honest communication. Exhibits cultural competence and cultural humility.
  • Effectively prioritizes tasks and work assignments. Delegates tasks as appropriate, reviews work, and follows up to assure successful and timely completion.
  • Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope
  • Evaluates program activities and milestones, including providing updates at team meetings with table and figure summaries.
  • Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates clinical research assignments


Minimum Qualifications:


This position requires a doctorate degree (or equivalent) and minimum of three years of related experience.


The ideal candidate has clinical research experience, including training and guiding others; is highly organized; has excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills; has proficient knowledge and skills to support program specific data review and interpretation; is able to think and function independently; is proficient in all Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; has excellent organizational and leadership skills, has exceptional attention to detail, and is able to master responsibilities quickly and independently while working collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team and with community partners. Prior experience with Epic and REDCap is preferred but not required. Prior experience working with older adults or patients with neurological conditions is preferred but not required.
