Job Description


      Position Summary:
      The Clinical Nurse Practice Specialist is a clinical leader for an area of nursing practice across Methodist and Regions Hospitals. The advanced knowledge and skills required include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice, collaboration, education, mentoring, consultation and change leadership. This advanced nursing practice role is focused on influencing patient care, nursing practice and organizational change. This role attends to the needs of patients in a particular population wherever they may present along the continuum of care. This role coordinates complex patient care, evaluates patient care outcomes, utilizes and conducts clinical research, provides professional consultation and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration. This role also develops tools (e.g. critical pathways, order sets, guidelines, protocols and policies) which facilitate care rendered by others in basic practice. This role embeds evidence into clinical practice, provides leadership in quality improvement, and provides innovative solutions throughout the system.


      Education/Experience:
      • For areas with an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specialty certification available: Master’s Degree in Nursing, completion of required education prerequisites to be licensed as an APRN.
      OR
      • For areas without an APRN specialty certification: DNP or completion within 3 years of date of hire
      • Maintain specialty certification as appropriate to the patient population served. (i.e. BLS, ACLS, etc)
      • Three (3) years (6240 hours) clinical staff nursing in acute care or at least two (2) years (4160 hours) functioning in an APRN role.


      Special Knowledge/Skills/Certifications/Licenses:
      1. Licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Minnesota.
      2. Licensed as an advanced practice register nurse where specialty certification is available.
      3. Certified by a national nurse certification organization acceptable to the Minnesota Board of Nursing (CNS, NP, CNM) where specialty certification is available.
      4. Knowledge of current nursing theories, practices and techniques.
      5. Knowledge of principles of growth and development over lifespan of patients served.
      6. Knowledge of principles of adult learning and education methods.
      7. Knowledge of dynamics of group process.
      8. Knowledge of research process and scientific inquiry.
      9. Skilled in leading groups and implementing change.
      10. Skilled in critical thinking.
      11. Skilled in working across the continuum of care.
      12. Ability to apply advanced nursing practice in clinical care delivery.
      13. Ability to identify educational needs, plan and implement transfer of knowledge.
      14. Ability to assess and diagnoses needs and achieve outcomes.
      15. Ability to perform effectively as part of a team as well as work independently.
      16. Ability to take initiative.
      17. Ability to respond and manage change.
      18. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
      19. Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and prioritizes appropriately.

      Additional Information:

      The Clinical Nurse Practice Specialist position supports the Emergency Center and point-of-contact for Peds/Neonatal topics. It is based out of Methodist Hospital, but requires a concerted partnership on aligning policies and procedures with HealthPartners - Regions Hospital.
