Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Classroom Assistant for the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Assists in the routine maintenance and organization of the classroom or work group.
  • Assists in maintaining the daily records and materials for client.
  • Works within the center-based setting, typically a classroom or job site, implementing educational, behavioral, vocational and leisure programming.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office, clerical, bookkeeping, library assistant or related experience depending on the duties to be performed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working well with children or adults with autism who are educationally, physically and behaviorally challenged preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Competent communication skills.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, have effective client service skills, and have the ability to instruct and provide support to the specific student population.
  • Ability to use specialized instructional and/or record-keeping instruments.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Duties may involve running and physically interacting with individuals with Autism (Adults 21 years plus) driving vans or other vehicles.
  • Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, adults, and staff moving about.
  • Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day.
  • Following training must be physically capable of safely providing crisis management techniques including restraining, lifting, blocking individuals with challenging behavior.
  • Driving vans and assisting clients in and out of vehicles.
Special Conditions
  • In accordance with state mandated requirements, a Mantoux test will be administered to successful applicants to verify the absence of tuberculosis. In addition, the successful applicant, at the cost of the university, will be required to be inoculated against Hepatitis B, unless the successful applicant waives this vaccination in writing.
  • Successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • In accordance with New Jersey State law, applicants must agree to undergo, and authorize the university to conduct fingerprint, criminal history and/or child-abuse record checks with various law enforcement agencies, including but not limited to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Identification Division and/or The New Jersey Division of State Police Bureau of Identification. Applicants must also assume any costs incurred by the university associated with the background investigations whether required by statute or not.
