Reports to: Director of Health Wellness Education OT Exempt: (Salaried)

Compensation: $80-$100/day ($480-$600/week)

At Camp Fire Columbia, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to find and pursue their spark– a passion that inspires and drives them to set and achieve goals for their future. Founded in 1910, our comprehensive program starts with early intervention at the elementary level, bridges the learning gap for middle school, and helps students thrive and plan for bright futures during high school. During the school year, Camp Fire works in partnership with dozens of schools in the Metro Area. During the summer months, we offer summer camps in the Portland metro area and at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century old trees. Our programs directly serve over 4,000 kids ages 5-18 each year across a nine-county area, including programming in Clackamas, Multnomah, Yamhill and the greater Portland metro region. Position Overview:

This position’s primary responsibility is to care for and supervise the children of the year-round camp employees. This position will maintain a regular schedule Sunday to Thursday 9am to 9pm and friday 9am to 1pm with 2 hour breaks each day. May support camp programing when scheduled but not needed for childcare. Daily responsibilities include caring for staff children aged 6 weeks to 12 years old, supervising staff children during meals, nap time, and as-needed through the program day and supporting unit staff with cabin coverage if necessary.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that make that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environment by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation, including supporting Namanu by assisting with duties outside of this role.

2. Create a safe and stimulating environment for Namanu year round employees’ children.

  • Responsible for ensuring basic needs are met including sufficient naps, hygiene, reasonable eating habits, and communicating with Healthcare team and the child’s guardians as needed.
  • Plan and engage children in age appropriate activities throughout the day including games, crafts, short hikes, etc.
  • Care shifts will be scheduled during weekly staff scheduling meetings.
  • Supervise and support 1-4 children between 6 weeks and 12 years old.

3. Support camp programing and camp staff when on shift but not needed for childcare.

  • Support role include Washing dishes, and helping staff with set up or breakdown of activities.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall well being of employee’s children age ranging 6 weeks-12 years old and supports staff with direct child supervision. No staff supervision responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Has a High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. We are able to hire a small number of current high-school aged staff that are at least 16-years-old, but the majority of our staff must be 18 years or older.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions.
  • Ability to interact with campers of varying age levels.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manages time and stress levels, and proactively solve problems.
  • Preferred 21 and over
  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Prior to June 2023, must be able to obtain a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card, Infant/Child/Adult First Aid & CPR certification and complete the Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse online training module. https://occd.educadium.com/


Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


The employee must frequently move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to traverse varied terrain over the 60 acres of main camp, be stationary for prolonged periods, and gather supplies from various heights and locations. In compliance with covid-19 protocols, employees are asked to wear a face mask when not actively consuming food/beverage.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions 95% of the time. The employee may be occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional periods of excessive noise (i.e. meal times, talent show).


Housing for this position will be with other staff members. Living spaces may not include full exterior walls, electricity or a private space away from campers. The bathroom may be located in a building a short distance away and will be an all-gender space. Depending on session assignments and camper numbers, staff may be required to move to different housing between sessions.
