Job Description
Full time: Boulder, CO (or remote) until piloting with 10-25% travel. During piloting (site TBD), the Chief of Engineering will spend a significant amount of time at the pilot site.


OMC Hydrogen seeks to commercialize a novel thermochemical redox cycle to make affordable green hydrogen and syngas for making hydrocarbons at commercially relevant scales using low-cost, domestically abundant materials and sustainable sources of heat, water, and carbon dioxide. The process has substantial cost and operating advantages compared to electrolysis or photochemical methods without the pollution or price volatility of fossil-based methods. The role:


The Chief Engineer (ChENG) will provide key leadership in scaling OMC’s technology from the current laboratory benchtop scale to the pilot scale and into commercial demonstration units. The ChENG guides the day-to-day activities of internal engineers while also providing direction and oversight to outside firms performing design work as well as procurement and construction work of the pilot reactor. The ChENG supports fundraising analyses with contributions to economic models as well as direct interaction with potential investors and strategic partners. As one of the first employees of OMC, the ChENG of will have the opportunity and freedom to mold many internal practices and projects to their personal vision.


Responsibilities:


  • Establish ownership of the creation of documents for design projects including Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s), Project & Equipment Specifications and inputs required for FEED and Detailed Engineering as well as basic instrumentation and control philosophy specifications.
  • Protect and document company IP in both internal practices and work with external vendors.
  • Assist with new technology and product development.
  • Lead internal and external HAZOP exercises for pilot and follow-on facilities.
  • Lead process evaluation and optimization through process simulation tools such as Aspen or HYSYS and coordinate experimental validation and improvement of process technoeconomic models.
  • Help formulate company design practices and tools while adhering to relevant technical standards and regulations.
  • Constantly pursue efforts for improvement of technology, design tools, work processes & procedures.
  • Be able to document all calculations and work processes in a clear, concise format comprehensible by a competent engineer.
  • Assist with selection of vendors/partners for contracted engineering work including soliciting and evaluating bids and management of design processes, including milestones and reviews.
  • Perform and/or oversee calculations for sizing of equipment, control valves and piping.
  • Tailor projects to new unit designs or revamps for industry integration include petroleum refining (hydrotreating), ammonia production, steelmaking (direct reduction of iron via hydrogen),
  • Provide Process Engineering scale-up expertise and lead inside and outside teams for the pilot and follow-on commercial demonstration projects, including conceptual designs, basic engineering (including process selection, simulation, and equipment selection/sizing), front end engineering and design, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operations.


Requirements:


  • Experience/working knowledge in managing outside engineers or functioning as an owner’s engineer
  • Experience with high temperature processes and materials (>1,000°C)
  • Expertise in process simulation, generation of PFD, P&ID, specifying/sizing equipment, process control philosophies, project documentation, and project management
  • Ability to translate strategies into tactics
  • Experience working with industrial codes and standards
  • 10+ years’ work experience in process design, petrochemical processes, refining, chemical industry environments, and/or cleantech
  • Experience or familiarity with basic and detailed engineering design work processes
  • Demonstrated experience in scaling a process up along increasing technology readiness levels, ideally through a commercial deployment
  • Ability to communicate up and down the chain of command
  • Past management experience of direct reports
  • Detail-oriented yet creative in science and engineering


Education/Certifications:


  • Master’s degree or Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering or related field is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer licensing preferred


Compensation:


  • Health insurance
  • $180,000 - $240,000 base compensation annually with stock options
