Job Number: 1383

Riverside Research is seeking a Chemist or Chemical Engineer with experience in nanomaterials or inorganic materials synthesis and processing. This position is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with limited/ occasional travel (e.g., 1-2 weeks per quarter).

This position is focused on advanced research in 2D conductive materials, including surface functionalization. The candidate for this position will monitor material development from synthesis of particles to composite manufacturing on to characterization in order to determine resultant properties. The candidate will optimize existing synthetic methods to improve outcomes and achieve the highest performance. This work is part of an integrated team and will involve communicating project progress to audiences from varying levels of expertise.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate increasing reaction scale of existing processes to larger scale reactions
  • Lead a full development effort including conception, synthesis, integration, and characterization of nanomaterials
  • Integrate materials into nano and macro composites for DoD and potential commercial applications
  • Design, setup, and optimize acidic etching reactions, including work with hydrofluoric acid (HF)
  • Integrate with and promote community standards
  • Perform critical analysis on aspects of composite systems to optimize capability enhancement v. required mechanical properties of filled matrices
  • Responsible for composite layup, fabrication, and characterization of optimized nano and macro filled polymer matrix composites and hybrid systems
  • Develop collaborative relationship with customers, stakeholders, and other mission partners

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Experience in characterization techniques such as Electron microscopy (SEM and/or TEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Centrifugation, Differential scanning microscopy (DSC), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Profilometry, Rheology, Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman, UV-Vis
  • Bachelor's in chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or chemical engineering
  • Understanding of and willingness to work with HF
  • Experience with 2D metallic materials and nanoparticle chemistry
  • Experience in designing and developing new chemical synthetic methods

Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or chemical engineering
  • Ability to manage time independently
  • Experience working with hydrofluoric acid (HF)
  • Active Top Secret w/ SCI Security Clearance
  • Experience with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
  • Experience in mechanical evaluation of composite samples
  • Strong organizational skills; self-starter required
