Job Description
Works under the supervision of the Administratrator or Supervisor. Will assist staff in rendering care to residents. Observes and reports unusual symptoms and conditions of residents immediately to the person in charge. Reports any incidents/accidents and records in Log Book or on appropriate form. Inspects CNAs rooms and other work. Counsels and shows CNAS how to perform certain duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School education or equivalent.
2. Training in basic first aid and CPR.
3. One year experience working with elderly preferred.
4. Genuine interest in older adults.
5. Good mental and physical health and appearance.
a. Physical examination upon employment and yearly thereafter.
b. No know problems with drug addiction and/or alcohol.
6. Alertness and ability to recognize changes in resident’s conditions.
7. Possess qualities of loyalty and dependability.
8. Ability to work congenially with others in administering duties.
9. Ability to intervene in a crisis.
10. Awareness of resident’s rights.
11. Supervision abilities/skills.
12. Good writing skills.
13. Ability to document situations and incidents that are performed CNAs.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR:
Assisting and treating residents in a pleasant manner conducive to their safety and comfort. Adhering to instructions issued by Management and to established Personal Care Home routine. Performing duties in accordance with established methods and techniques as outlined under “Duties” and in the Policy and Procedure Manual, providing residents with maximum care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Review “ log” book and get report from the person you are relieving. Initial reports in “log” book that have been left since your last shift.
2. Document in log book and meet with your replacement to share job pertinent information and reports.
3. Counsel and advise staff in a private setting.
4. Document mishaps and other situations as necessary.
5. Inspect caregiver’s work.
6. Work as a team.
7. Bring to the attention of appropriate persons when there might exist safety issues.
8. Point out safety concerns to staff.
9. Check and conform to cleaning schedule. Bath schedule and calendar for resident appointments.
10. After obtaining assignments, make rounds and let staff know as well as residents in your care know you are present and that you are there for their assistance and for the caregivers for their assistance and supervision.
11. Inform residents and staff of any special appointments or activity at this time.
12. Make sure residents are ready for and on time for meals.
13. Assist kitchen staff with serving meals and clean up.
14. Resident activities of daily living (ADL’s):
a. Assist residents with bathing, grooming and dressing.
b. Residents who have difficulty getting into or out of the shower should not be left to do their bath alone. “Bathers” shall be present during bath.
c. Follow the bath schedule for residents who require assistance or who need to be reminded of bath schedules due to their forgetfulness.
d. Bath time is an excellent opportunity to observe residents for changes in their conditions. REPORT ANY UNUSAL CONDITION TO THE ADMINISTRTOR OR SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY.
e. Residents clothing should be kept clean and in good repair. Notify ADMINISTRATOR of residents needs for additional clothes, personal hygiene supplies, diapers, etc. Each residents is assigned a laundry day on the laundry schedule—please adhere to this unless there is an emergency need (Laundry is responsibility of the night shift.)
f. Fingernails should be kept clean and trimmed.
g. Shampoos should be done weekly for residents who are unable to go to the beauty or barber shop on a weekly basis.
h. Toenails should be checked. Notify Administrator of residents who need to have toenails rimmed. WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TRIM TOENAILS >
i. Assist residents with mouth care if needed, especially upon arising and after meals. (Dentures should be cleaned after each meal.)
7. Housekeeping Duties-
a. Through/deep cleaning will be done weekly by Housekeepers.
b. Check on each room and common areas to see that caregivers have done work in an excellent condition.
c. Beds should be made in an excellent state. Make sure that linen is changed according to the schedule and in between times as needed.
d. Ensure that waste baskets in residents’ rooms are emptied.
e. ENSURE THAT THE BUILDING IS INSPECTION READY BEFORE LEAVING.
f. Check handicapped resident’s rooms more frequently to be sure they are clean and odor free.
g. Report any maintenance needs to the Front Office as soon as you notice them, including light bulbs, if they are in the ceiling. If they are on tables, please change them.
h. Make sure bath rooms are clean and supplied with towels, soap, and toilet paper.
i. Make a list of residents who are low in toiletries: soap, tooth paste etc…
j. Ensure that counters, sinks, counter tops, showers, toilets, and floors are clean, since housekeepers clean weekly.
k. Check for safety features-non skid type rugs can be used, only if family insists. We do not endorse any rugs.
l. Check Refrigerators in residents rooms for cleanliness and keep an eye open for spoiled foods,
m. Check to ensure common area bath rooms are clean.
n. Check to see that common area refrigerators are clean.
o. Check to see that common area floors are clean.
p. Check to see that all living areas are clean and dusted.
8. Check activity schedule each day. Remind residents of events taking place 15 minutes prior to activity and assist staff in getting them to and from the activity as necessary. When possible ad appropriate, participate in activities with the residents. BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF YOUR OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES.
9. Encourage residents to go outside as weather permits. Accompany frail residents and be aware of any resident who may wander off the property.
10. Know emergency procedures and check periodically to see if your staff is familiar with the procedures listed in the Emergency Procedure Book:
a. Met immediate need of resident involved. b. Notify (911) for any sever and questionable occurrence. c. Notify Management by digital pager, if not in building.
11. Confidentiality is a MUST. Never discuss resident’s condition with anyone other than facility staff matters. Never discuss information regarding the facility, its residents, or staff with anyone other than appropriate facility management personnel.
12. Always exercise good hand washing techniques. Wash hands before passing medication, before serving meals and before assisting residents. Hand washing is imperative. You should ensure that all persons wash their hands as indicated; however, passing medication is only if this is applicable.
13. Resident’s vital signs (VS) and weights will be monitored on an as needed basis unless otherwise indicated. Check the schedule for dates that VS must be done, and assist with the caregivers doing this as well.
14. Recorded any pertinent information that occurs on your shift in the log book prior to clocking out. Meet with your replacement and give a status report. Ensure that other caregivers log in their concerns and pertinent information.
15. When confronted with conditions which have resulted in exposure to blood—Follow the instructions as outlined in the Blood Borne Pathogen Policy guidelines posted on bulletin board and in the front office.
16. Under NO condition should any caregiver expose him/herself to lifting weights which would endanger their own physical condition. Always position yourself in such a manner as to be prepared for any sudden need to respond to falling or supporting a resident. Unstable residents require 2 caregivers when assisting with baths and awkward ambulation needs.
