Position Summary

Review hospital medical records for Department of Medicine provider documentation and assign the proper CPT and ICD-10 codes. Ensure accurate charges are captured and entered for billing on a timely basis.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain coding certification.
  • Research correct coding as needed.
  • Assist in the coordination of efforts related to increasing provider awareness in documentation requirements and to fully capture all inpatient charges.
  • Accurately enter billing information into inpatient charge capture system.
  • Review all inpatient medical records for the identification and capture of Medicine services. Code evaluation and management services and bedside procedures to the appropriate level per provider documentation. Assign ICD-10 codes per specialty.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Apply appropriate coding rules, teaching physician regulations, billing guidelines, and department policies.
  • Accurately enter tracking codes and documentation information when applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in medical terminology, evaluation and management CPT codes and ICD-10 Coding.
  • Organized in material, thought, and action.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain coding on a large patient volume and work within stressful situations.
  • Previous coding experience or experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in a related field.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have one of the following coding credentials: AHIMA (CCA, CCS, or CCS-P); AAPC (CPC, CPC-A, CPC-H, CPC-H-A, or one of the AAPC specialty-specific coding credentials (the specialty-specific credential is only valid for that employee’s department).
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: The RHIT or RHIA (or eligible) certification in health information management may be recognized in lieu of a coding credential and does not require experience.

Salary Range

$24.80 - $37.19 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
