ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general supervision of a Working Supervisor, performs a variety of duties of which the following are typical examples:

• Performs repair of equipment - desks, chairs, tables, shelves, cabinets, etc.
• Performs measuring, sawing, squaring, drilling, sanding, fitting, and fastening activities.
• Performs other DPW related duties as assigned.
• Hangs and repairs doors, installs and repairs related hardware.
• Hangs pictures and informational signs.
• Constructs, alters, and repairs structures, buildings, furniture, equipment, and fixtures made of wood, Azek, steel stud, or similar materials.
• Fabricates, alters, and repairs structural woodwork, floors, stairways, and fixtures.
• Work is performed in accordance with building codes and standard trade practices.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to take a written examination. Those who score 70% or higher on the written examination will be asked to take a practical exam.
• Minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated carpentry experience.
• Internal applicants must have a permanent civil service status.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

All labor positions; skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled in the Cambridge Department of Public Works require repetitive lifting between 25-100 pounds, proper bending, squatting, stretching, pushing, climbing, dragging, and pulling. Employee is required to adhere to all safety and dress code policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work in a moderate to high noise level environment caused by the sound of machinery or powered equipment being used. Occasional odor may occur during work.
