Job Description

Duties

Major Duties include but not limited to:

  • Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications and determining the layout and work sequences of work to be completed. Must have the ability to improvise using sound judgement to complete work when confronted with incomplete blueprints, sketches and work order information;
  • Constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness;
  • Determining the necessary parts and materials required for repairs and installations and submit purchase requisitions for these materials.
  • Constructing air- and weather-tight assemblies; installing metal pan ceilings, acoustical ceilings and floor tile and carpet; repair roofs, set up concrete forms, assisting with pouring concrete and sheet metal fabrication. Fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs signs, both interior and exterior.
  • Performing all work in accordance with policies and procedures of Veterans Administration, The Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Fire Protection Association and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Setting up and operating a wide variety of wood working machines and tools;
  • Assembling items with a wide variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, mortise and tenon joints, and using glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops;
  • Constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames (wooden, metal and plastic), rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding;

Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday; 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm - 11:30pm, 11:00pm - 7:30am OR Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm - 11:30pm, 11:00pm - 7:30am OR Tuesday - Saturday 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm - 11:30pm, 11:00pm - 7:30am (Shift to be determined at time of selection)
Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD05023A
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, the employee stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The employee may lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee occasionally lifts and moves heavier items.
Working Conditions: Some work is performed in shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subject to cuts, burns, and contusions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. The employee may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective clothing and devices.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
