Departmental Overview
The College of Engineering (COE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 1, 800 graduate students and 3,200 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus.
The Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department (IEOR) is an academic department within the College of Engineering (COE). IEOR is home to 15 core faculty, 6 emeriti, and 4-5 lecturers. The department offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees; as well as two professional master's programs - Master's of Engineering (MEng) in IEOR and Master's of Analytics. IEOR is at the forefront of research and teaching of operations research and analytics methods, as well as the advancement of quantitative methodologies to solve problems in the areas of healthcare, supply chains, energy, security, finance, and e-commerce. The department has strong ties with other departments in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering and enjoys close relationships with the departments of Statistics, Mathematics, and Economics, as well as with the Haas School of Business.
The IEOR department launched the Master of Analytics degree program in August 2021, the inaugural cohort matriculated Fall 2022, and is headquartered at UC Berkeley's Industrial Engineering and Operations Research department (IEOR). Our mission is to train professionals in the analytical tools for data-driven decision making to address complex business challenges across industries ranging from e-commerce to healthcare, from energy to transportation. These challenges relate to the design, analysis, and efficient management of systems involving supply chains, energy, human resources, pricing, capacity planning, financing, risk management, and others.
This position, Career Services Officer (Career Services Specialist 4), will support the new Berkeley IEOR Master of Analytics Degree, which is a one-year program. The first cohort of 74 students will graduate in Spring 2023. The cohort size is expected to grow until a steady state of 150 is achieved. The Career Services Officer is charged with creating, implementing and managing a career development and placement program for students of the new Master of Analytics professional degree. Collaborating closely with the Faculty Director, the campus Career Center, industry/organizational partners, and other resources the Career Services Officer will establish scalable programs and services to advise students and alumni on career issues and strategies, job search methods, resume preparation, placement options, and related matters. This position will work with the Faculty Director, College Relations, alumni, industry partners and others to establish and manage relationships with potential employers. The Career Services Officer will also plan and implement activities to create and sustain relationships with the range of constituencies needed for a successful career planning and placement program. This position involves planning, developing, and implementing programs, activities, events, counseling, and advising focused on students' and alumni career development. Works with students, alumni, and potential employers.
The Career Services Officer will report to the Department Manager as part of a team of 8 working on telling the story of the department and its programs. At IEOR, we commit to: Serve students first. Responsibilities
30% Career Planning Advising: Students and Alumni
Provide career advising in particularly complex areas that require specialized expertise in working with junior as well as mid- to senior-level individuals who are looking to advance in their careers or switch entirely to another function and/or industry.
Use standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help M. Analytics students assess career goals. Guide clients by providing decision making and goal setting tools helping them to identify interests, values, skills, and internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals. Identify personal crisis situations and refer clients to appropriate resources.
Develop and conduct workshops and programs to meet students' needs. Organize and facilitate workshops to convey current trends in the workplace, internship placement, and job search process, such as a panel of both contingency and retained recruiters.
Ensure that students have current information about specific job markets, internship opportunities, and about recruiter perceptions by educating career advisors and communicating directly with students.
Meet regularly with Faculty Director and College Relations to develop and implement alumni marketing and outreach programs. Establish protocols and programs for serving Alumni, locally and in other regions. Travel as needed to meet program goals.
30% Network and Relationship Building
Establish new relationships with corporations and other organizations related to career services for M.Analytics students and alumni. Identify and contact companies about recruiting M.Analytics students and offering internships both on and off campus.
Work proactively to strengthen relationships with recruiting companies in designated industries. Assist them in developing and executing recruiting and marketing strategies. Coordinate recruiter relationships with UC Berkeley Career Center as appropriate.
Work with other units and faculty to develop comprehensive relationships between companies and the M.Analytics program.
Build long term relationships with students and alumni. Facilitate networking opportunities among students and alumni/contacts in industry.
Promote internship placements, employment, networking, and corporate sponsorship opportunities to appropriate student populations.
30% Career Development Program Design, Implementation, and Management
Design and implement a suite of career development and placement services that provide M.Analytics students and alumni with a career edge. Collaborate closely with the Faculty Director and and College of Engineering, campus, and external resources to identify opportunities for synergy with existing programs.
In collaboration with the Faculty Director, College Relations, IEOR Academic Services, IT and others, research, develop, and execute new programs and outreach services to educate, coach, and continuously update students, alumni, and other parties interested in internship opportunities, career development opportunities, and other options.
Develop customized services for specific populations and provide tailored content to support outreach efforts. Make use of a variety of marketing strategies and methods from in-person networking and seminars to large-scale virtual events, webinars, and use of social media.
Participate in and may co-sponsor key programs and events, e.g. Visit Day, orientation, M.Analytics commencement reception, etc.
Work with graduate student groups to ensure alignment of student career desires with plans to target companies and to provide general recruiter feedback on their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Research and analyze economic and employment trend data to provide context for marketing decisions and support outreach efforts. Develop presentations for CoE
management, students and campus professionals.
Establish metrics to track utilization of services, including advising and workshops/Webinars. Compile data for program evaluation and to aid in marketing.
Manage program improvement processes. Regularly conduct needs assessments, and evaluate program effectiveness. Collaborate with faculty and other members of the University community to update, enhance, or eliminate programs.
Present sensitive and difficult information about the career program, including presentations to the media and the public.
Manage career development services logistics and information systems. Use thorough knowledge of career program and information systems to build applications and improve web sites and other supporting technologies.
10% Plans and executes events related to internships, career development, cohort community building, etc.
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
Advanced knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
Advanced knowledge of career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.
Strong ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.
Strong ability to work with people from diverse cultures.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300 to $104,400 annually. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
