Position Summary
In support of UIC's Campus Master Plan and the University's Strategic Priorities, the Campus Space Planner position will support the University's efforts to efficiently utilize its facilities and space through intentional space planning. The Campus Space Planner position will play a valued role in the Planning & Design unit within Planning, Sustainability and Project Management (PSPM) by conducting campus and space planning studies for the University's facilities and campus grounds. The Campus Space Planner will apply their analytical skills to develop thoughtful recommendations for the use of campus facilities. The position uses independent judgement to make decisions regarding planning analyses, architectural drawings, spatial layouts, siting and massing diagrams, maps and visualizations using graphic design, planning and architecture software. The position will also help develop architectural planning guidelines, campus plans, reports and presentations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participates in the annual space and capital planning process by assisting with engagement efforts to identify program needs related to facilities and space. Helps to develop and publish the annual space and capital plan using graphic design software.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Planning and Design and the Associate Director for Campus and Space Planning to analyze campus-wide space utilization and strategize short- and long-term space use for facilities. Assists in defining architectural and space problems, synthesize solutions into reasonable recommendations and influencing the creation of related departmental procedures
  • Develops maps, sketches, facility massing studies and other visualizations in support of campus planning initiatives for facilities and grounds using AutoCAD, Revit, Illustrator, InDesign and other design tools.
  • Assists with the creation and production of space guidelines and other planning documents as needed, using graphic design software.
  • Develops and draws basic architectural drawings, conceptual spatial layouts, test-fit diagrams and planning visualizations using AutoCAD, Illustrator, InDesign and other design software.
  • Analyze facility and space data and integrate it into broader architectural and planning studies and develop recommendations.
  • Prepares and delivers high-quality graphics, visualizations and presentations for campus and space planning initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to take directives and work independently when needed.
  • Broad knowledge of architectural design, space planning and campus planning principles.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and analyze facility and space data.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in space planning, campus planning and/or architectural design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, space planning, interior design, urban planning, or related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and collaboration skills, with ability to communicate ideas and projects effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp.
  • Possesses strong commitment to team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Revit/BIM software preferred.
  • Master’s degree in architecture, space planning, interior design, urban planning, or related field.
  • Experience developing plans and/or planning studies preferred.
  • Professional experience applying both architectural and planning principles is desired.
  • Experience at a higher education institution or similarly complex environment is preferred.
