Camp Counselor Jobs

This seasonal position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Day Camp Counselor position at the Valley Shore YMCA provides direct supervision of a group of children creating a safe, supportive and nurturing atmosphere where kids can develop relationships and have fun begging to come back to camp again next year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs other tasks and duties as may be assigned.
• Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as required
• Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
• Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
• Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
• Supervises a group of children.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
• Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting
• High school student, graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
• Previous experience with diverse populations preferred
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud depending on how much fun the kids are having!
• Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings
