Cabinet Mountain Wilderness- Wilderness/ Trails Ranger

INTRODUCTION
This position is located on a wilderness Forest Service unit. Incumbent performs a variety of work in support of unit wilderness program.

MAJOR DUTIES
Assures wilderness work projects are completed safely and utilizes minimal tool concept.

Assures wilderness areas and trails are maintained to established trail standards. Assists in re-establishment of native plants at denuded campsites and abandoned trails by preparing the soil for revegetation, transporting plants to the site and protecting the site after revegetation takes place.

Implements current NEPA and Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) processes. Can process and interpret historical and cultural values specific to wilderness areas.

Works with other agencies, interest groups, and partnerships to accomplish wilderness tasks and studies.

Explains established rules and regulations to wilderness campers and can implement wilderness fire suppression techniques.

Directs or leads one or two people engaged in trail maintenance and wilderness contacts. Interacts with a variety of user groups such as backpackers, stock users, fisheries, floaters, commercial hunting outfitters.

Makes safety checks of wilderness camp areas, outfitter areas and records data for corrective action. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications.

Contacts user groups to provide wilderness philosophy, regulations, and current camp or fire restrictions. Provides standard information on resource management and stock use practices in wilderness areas. Checks for compliance with regulations issues notices for common violations and reports other violations to supervisor. Collects monies for sale of maps. Issues campfire permits.

Inventories signs and check for accuracy and maintenance level. Gathers specific data on wilderness conditions.

Educates user groups on "Leave No Trace" camping techniques and packing out garbage. Responsible for curtailing the improper management of human waste and educating people on importance of campsites placed away from water sources.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation
– $200/week* Living Allowance
– $40/week Commuting Allowance
– $500/month Housing Allowance (6 disbursements)
– $1,100* To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck
– Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,247, received upon successful completion of position
– Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (640hrs minimum of service)

Professional Development Opportunities: Wilderness assignments involve the performance of a variety of related tasks requiring the use of judgment and skill in selecting proper techniques and adapting to situations at hand. Little difficulty is encountered in determining what needs to be done. Decisions made involve making choices in variable work environment. When faced with an unusual problem, the supervisor is available for technical guidance. The employee is expected to exercise independence in recognizing such differences, choosing the right course of action, and then selecting and executing the proper task sequences for completing the work.

Libby is a small town in a rural setting, nearest big town is 80 miles away. Public Transportation and basic services are limited.

Housing or Stipend Provided?
C.Partner will pay the SCA to provide housing allowance for the member.

Interns will need to provide their own housing arrangements in the towns of Libby and/or Troy, Mt. Forest Service Staff on site will assist with netowrking and provide contacts for potential rentals. The allowance is $500/month which may or may not cover the expense of a monthly rental. This position receives 6 disbursments over the 24 week internship.
We encourage the selected interns to research and confirm housing as much ahead of the start date as possible.
