Bus Driver
General Description
Under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operation & Transportation, the Bus Driver drives a school bus and other vehicles to transport students over designated routes; does related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans/washes vehicle interior and exterior, windows and mirrors as needed.
- May render first aid to passengers.
- Maintains order among students by following district policies.
- Attends safety meetings and programs.
- Conducts yearly bus evacuation drills.
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (e.g. road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation
- Carry out prescribed safety checks.
- Reports mechanical defects and needed repairs.
- Transports students and school staff on special events and athletic trips.
- Operates two-way radio system.
- Assists disabled or special needs students in boarding or leaving vehicle and escorts others as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned
- Performs safety inspection of vehicle prior to operation.
- Ability to drive over designated routes in all weather conditions according to established time schedules.
Basic Qualifications
- Possess a va lid California driver's license Class A or B with Air Brakes and Passenger endorsements
- Possess a valid First Aid Certificate and/or pass the CHP exam for first aid
- Equivalent to completion of high school.
- Possess a valid California Special Driver's Certificate for School Bus
- Possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate
Required Skills
- Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
- Knowledge of safe driving practices.
- Knowledge of and the ability to establish and maintain appropriate interaction with students.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents and District employees.
- Willing to train qualified candidate.
- Ability to operate the controls of a school bus and to drive a school bus safely and efficiently.
- Ability to learn a prescribed bus route.
- Report/documents observations and/or incidents to director.
Physical Requirements
Physical ability to perform assigned duties, including sitting for long periods of time, performing emergency student evacuations, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, etc. Ability to demonstrate mental acuity in the performance of job- related duties. Will be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings.
Skills for Special Needs Driver (Desired for particular routes only)
- CPR certification
- Training in diabetic awareness to recognize the signs of Hyperglycemia and Hypoglycemia and knowledge of individual student’s specific treatment protocols.
- Training on anaphylactic shock to include recognizing symptoms and treatment including administration of Epi
- Specific training for seizure management including recognition of signs of an impending seizure, administration of treatments such as Diastat, Magnetics and procedures to ensure the safety and modesty of the student.
- Education/training in the field of special needs development

- Training/familiarity in special needs behavioral management.
Salary:
Range C of the Classified Salary Schedule.
Work Year
181 work days / 202 paid days a year. Hours dependent upon district needs.
