Description

Summary:

This position is responsible for assisting with the cleaning, painting, grounds keeping, and light maintenance for the City of Hastings. Position responsibilities include ensuring a safe and healthy work and building environment for City employees and the public in compliance with State, Federal, and local regulations.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with general plumbing, toiletry, carpentry, door and lock repair and/or replacement as needed.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties which will include but not be limited to stripping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming and carpet cleaning.
  • Reviews policies and procedures and recommends changes for effective, environmentally-friendly facility maintenance.
  • Cleaning hard surface floors;
  • Vacuuming carpets;
  • Moves files, furniture, supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Disposing of trash, composting, and recycling materials; and,
  • Cleaning restrooms;
  • Dusting
  • Assists with recommending supplies, equipment, and procedures which enhance the buildings and their maintenance.
  • Paints and stains interior and exterior surfaces as needed, including doors, windows, walls, etc. which may require working at heights at times.
  • Restocks expendable supplies such as paper towels, soap, cleaning supplies.
  • Assist city departments and staff with building maintenance and janitorial issues.
  • Picking up debris;
  • Performs light maintenance such as minor repair of cleaning equipment, replacing light bulbs, etc.
  • Assists with setting up and cleaning up equipment, tables, chairs, and other equipment for conference room use.
  • Conducts general daily cleaning for assigned areas within various City buildings which will include but not be limited to:
    • Vacuuming carpets;
    • Cleaning restrooms;
    • Cleaning hard surface floors;
    • Washing windows
    • Disposing of trash, composting, and recycling materials; and,
    • Dusting
  • Snow removal;
  • General exterior upkeep.
  • Assists with moving, transporting, and performing general repair of office systems, furnishings, and general city equipment.
  • Exterior grounds maintenance; and
  • Weeding;
  • Conducts external ground maintenance which will include but not be limited to:
    • Picking up debris;
    • Weeding;
    • Snow removal;
    • Exterior grounds maintenance; and
    • General exterior upkeep.
  • Washing windows
  • Performs additional position-related responsibilities as apparent or as delegated.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent with a minimum of 1-2 years of responsible experience in building maintenance and repair.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional experience with facility maintenance and repair.
  • Previous education directly related to building maintenance: certificates and/or licensures that demonstrate broad familiarity with building maintenance and repair.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of general aspects of building maintenance, including painting, painting supplies, cleaning, cleaning supplies, and procedures.
  • Broad working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and municipal regulations and accepted standards regarding chemical use, and building and equipment maintenance standards.
  • Ability to reach and understand general instructions and directions. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate information verbally and in writing to a broad scope of people in an understandable manner.
  • The consistent, confident, and competent performance of all of the essential position functions outlined in this position description.
  • Working knowledge of basic math, chemistry, and physics.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate various cleaning and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to floor scrubbers, vacuums, snow blowers, mops, brooms, and ladders.
  • Ability to safely and properly left and carry heavy equipment, supplies, and furniture.


Holidays
Regular, part-time employees receive holiday pay on a prorated basis for all City holidays, regardless of whether they are scheduled to work on the day on which the holiday is recognized. This may result in adjusting schedules to maintain the number of budgeted hours for that position.
Sick Leave
Regular part-time employees will earn sick leave on a prorated basis, up to the maximum accrual equal to a full-time employee accrual rate. Sick leave may be accumulated to a maximum of 960 hours.
Vacation
Regular, part-time employees will earn vacation on a prorated basis, up to the maximum accrual equal to a full-time employee accrual rate
