Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Radiology Administrative Director of Technical Operations and Clinical Supervisor of Breast Imaging, the Multimodality Tech provides skill and initiative to the department mission through interactions with staff, supervisor, clinicians and others as necessary. Primary duties are to work as a multi modality technologist in the Breast Imaging section performing Mammography and Breast Ultrasound procedures and exams. Exams and procedures will include diagnostic and screening examinations; ultrasound and mammographic guided breast interventions and bone densitometry.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study. Identify and document any limitations to the sonographic exam.
  • Understands the requirements of the department by providing services to patients not only in performing of studies but also in providing any/all information on reports as necessary and appropriate.
  • Handles telephone calls and requests for services over the telephone and through other means both professionally and appropriately.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic exam.
  • Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand.
  • Competently and efficiently operate all electronic systems, such as PACS, RIS, Epic and others as required by the department and hospital.
  • Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.
  • Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow. Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures, i.e. biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative etc. Satisfies operational requirements to include covering the department as determined necessary through either the Manager or Lead technologist.
  • Performs duties as required in all areas of the department to include all campuses and either within Ultrasound or outside when appropriate for the hospital mission as determined by either the Manager or Lead technologist
  • Maintains equipment through interaction with both management and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Keep exam rooms clean, tidy and ready for use.
  • Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs and requirements through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
  • Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
  • Sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer..
  • Follow all high level disinfection policies and procedures.
  • Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate views and films and provides additional views and variations of techniques as required by Radiologist, Manager or Lead technologist.
  • Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
  • Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved.
  • Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.
  • Treats patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reports any/all problems to manager.
  • Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients.
  • Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and any inappropriate behavior.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times.
  • Ensures that all required documentation is properly performed to include but not limited to any/all of the following: proper filling out of requisitions, proper procedures completion related to all procedures performed, and proper recording of any required hospital/department and or insurance of managed care requirements for proper recording and or billing of Radiology procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary.
  • Work schedules as required through regularly scheduled hours or overtime as required for department needs.
  • Monitors patient conditions and if/when conditions are determined assistance may be required of an employee to take actions to facilitate the best course of action to include: nursing involvement, other assistance, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
  • Associates Degree (or equivalent) in Radiologic Technology from an AMA approved school.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Massachusetts State licenses in Radiography and Mammography are required.
  • Currently certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in (R) and (M). Certification in Breast Ultrasound either through the ARDMS or ARRT. Credentials are ARRT (BS) or RDMS (BR) and required within one year of hire. Must remain up-to-date on all applicable continuing education credits required for certifications held. Current BLS certification.

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 1 year of experience as a registered mammographer and at least 6 months of breast sonography required. Incumbent will be allowed 1 year post hire date to sit for and pass the examination for breast Sonography certification. This can be done through the ARDMS or ARRT.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and co-workers, to train students and staff mammographers.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures in both mammography and ultrasound and the operation and maintenance of Radiologic/Mammography and Ultrasound equipment.
  • Knowledge of bone density equipment and ability to analyze studies.
  • Extensive knowledge of breast anatomy and pathology.
  • Requires intermediate to advanced computer skills.
