Summary:
Under general direction performs skilled boiler plant operations, maintenance, and repair. May perform work in more than one craft discipline as personal skill permits and workload requires.

Responsibilities:

B oiler Operator Trainee
A ssists and supports Boiler Operators and Senior Boiler Operators in completion of duties. Studies hospital systems and exam preparation materials independently and with support of Boiler Operators and Senior Boiler Operators. Under close supervision, troubleshoots, repairs and conducts preventative maintenance of boilers and hospital facilities, conducting rounds and monitoring steam, water, air, glycol and medical gas systems. Performs chemical analysis of treated water systems. Follows safety precautions and procedures in performance of job duties. Monitors systems, including building environmental control, energy management, security, and fire protection/ detection systems, pneumatic tube system, and elevator car systems. Responds to service calls or work requests from all areas of the hospital relating to the repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, patient beds, hospital air handling systems, medical gas systems, lighting, and nurse call systems. Corrects problems or refers to another department. Performs other duties as assigned.
B oiler Operator
P rovides training to Boiler Operator Trainees. Gains twelve months of required experience operating and maintaining boilers in preparation for the Class II Boiler Operator Certificate of Fitness exam. Studies hospital systems and exam preparation materials independently and with support of Senior Boiler Operators. Troubleshoots, repairs and conducts preventative maintenance of boilers and hospital facilities, conducting rounds and monitoring steam, water, air, glycol and medical gas systems. Performs chemical analysis of treated water systems. Monitors systems, including building environmental control, energy management, security, and fire protection/ detection systems, pneumatic tube system, and elevator car systems. Responds to service calls or work requests from all areas of the hospital relating to the repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, patient beds, hospital air handling systems, medical gas systems, lighting, and nurse call systems. Corrects problems or refers to another department. Conducts preventative maintenance on air handlers, filters, exhaust fans, cold roof fans, heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, mechanical and refrigeration units. Identifies, researches and repairs mechanical problems. Troubleshoots and repairs heating, cooling and room pressurization problems, refrigeration units, ice machines, air handlers, humidifiers, heat pumps and chillers. Maintains differential pressure of rooms according to regulatory standards. Adjusts temperatures and humidity levels accordingly. Installs mechanical equipment as necessary. Follows safety precautions and procedures in performance of job duties.
S enior Boiler Operator
P rovides training to Boiler Operator Trainees and Boiler Operators. Troubleshoots, repairs and conducts preventative maintenance of boilers and hospital facilities, conducting rounds and monitoring steam, water, air, glycol and medical gas systems. Performs chemical analysis of treated water systems. Monitors systems, including building environmental control, energy management, security, and fire protection/ detection systems, pneumatic tube system, and elevator car systems. Responds to service calls or work requests from all areas of the hospital relating to the repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, patient beds, hospital air handling systems, medical gas systems, lighting, and nurse call systems. M INIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
B oiler Operator Trainee A high school diploma or GED equivalent. Boiler Operator & Senior Boiler Operator A high school diploma or GED equivalent. Process Technology associates degree or equivalent preferred.
M INIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
B oiler Operator Trainee None required.
B oiler Operator – One (1) year of operations experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
S enior Boiler Operator – Three (3) years of operations experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
M INIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS
B oiler Operator Trainee
M ust obtain State of Alaska Class 3 boiler operator certificate of fitness within 1 year of hire. Trainee level employment not to exceed 1 year.
B oiler Operator
S tate of Alaska Class 3 boiler operator certificate of fitness.
S enior Boiler Operator
S tate of Alaska Class 2 boiler operator certificate of fitness
A DDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
M ay be required to possess an Alaska driver’s license with a clean driving record.
