Job Description

Autopsy Pathology Specialist I

Autopsy

  • Performs evisceration, fluid measurements, x-ray documentation, and obtains routine sections for stock jar, culture, or genomics.
  • Demonstrates astute clinical judgement when handling patient remains and tissues. Appropriately triage tissue for different types of fixation or special studies.
  • Confers with autopsy resident and neuropathology fellow to identify special risks involved in a particular case or special techniques that will be necessary. As permitted by Autopsy Consent, and upon direction of pathologist, performs special procedures including but not limited to leg vein removal and spinal cord removal.
  • Orients and trains new residents, fellows, and medical students to the autopsy suite. Instructs in the use of personal protective equipment, evisceration technique, x-ray use, and culture selection.
  • For all autopsy requests, ensures all necessary documentation is completed appropriately and according to Massachusetts State Law requirements and hospital policy. Patient remains and any specimens obtained are labeled appropriately and according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Initiates autopsy workflow by setting up equipment and preparing patient’s remains for autopsy according to protocol. After autopsy, restores remains for removal by funeral home.
  • Enter data of patient medical record information into computer, assign autopsy, neuropathology, and GYN accession numbers using the laboratory information system. A folder of required documentation must be created for each autopsy. Consult autopsies must be invoiced
  • Assists in orienting and general supervision of volunteers and interns assigned to the autopsy service.
  • Accepts call at least one weekend per month and several evenings per week, or as needed depending on staffing levels. Performs all tasks and duties required according to protocol.

Morgue

  • Responsible for adult and perinatal remains accountability. All remains are to be identified daily and cross referenced with the Morgue Logbook. Any discrepancies should be documented and a BWH Safety Report filed.
  • Assist Funeral Directors, Medical Examiner, and New England Organ Bank with decedent identification, removals, viewings, and organ harvests.
  • Assist Chaplaincy, Social Work, and Nursing by preparing patients for viewings per request of family/next of kin.
  • Inventory any patient belongings left in the Morgue with the Technical Operations Manager. Non-soiled belongings will be brought to Patient & Family Relations. Valuables will be brought to the Cashier’s Office. All belongings are documented in the Patient Belongings Accountability Logbook.

Operations

  • Maintains diagnostic viability of patient specimens for routine pathology, special studies, research studies, medicolegal issues, tissue release to family, and specimen release per legal request. Organizes, files, and dispositions pathology specimens in an established, organized specimen storage system. Assists Pathology Residents and Senior Staff in specimen retrieval to permit additional diagnostic testing.
  • Oversees daily maintenance of morgue and autopsy suite. Ensures a clean, safe, and functional work environment. Restore facilities to safe, functional state following decontamination schedule. Inventories and maintains adequate supplies in an organized fashion.
  • Monitors functionality of morgue and autopsy suite equipment and identifies operational problems. Initiates corrective action and brings to attention of Technical Operations Manager.
  • Sustains a high level of awareness to numerous discrepancies that can create severe risk management issues.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Follows all Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital Policies.

  • Must demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills to permit collaborative and effective working relationships with intra and extra departmental employees.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with basic computer programs for data entry, searching for clinical information, case identification, and retrieval. Enter data both efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.
  • Preferred one year of relevant experience in a laboratory or funeral home.
  • Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403-1495
  • Ability to function independently.
  • Ability to perform evisceration of body and brain removal according to established protocol.
  • Must possess good manual dexterity.
  • Desire to train pathology residents, fellows, and medical students.
  • Bachelor’s Degree including 2 years college level courses in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Funeral Directing or other related Health Science, preferred.
  • Proficient in medical terminology and well versed in human anatomy.
